PURPLE - explored the peninsula (were to go away  )

CZ, Rescue Station Makov
20128 - PURPLE
previous info ( 5h): viewtopic.php?p=769761#p769761

Nouadhibou - the second largest city in Mauritania and serves as a major commercial center. It is situated on a 65-kilometer peninsula or headland called Ras Nouadhibou (more - wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouadhibou) - exactly near the border on the west side - the western side, with the Moroccan city of La Güera, is part of Western Sahara

- stork arrived to this peninsula on 18.11. (very west fly-path, above the the Atlantic coast)
- every day I see the same wind direction (from continent to ocean - from east to west)

Image

the stork flew over a smaller circuit in the southern area (the bigger: 19.11.)

Do you think he is returning to the beginning of the peninsula? I really wish he had found the right direction...

I really wish he had found the right direction - me too

I still think about this (probably also lost) white stork - flew away? wintered here successfully? what is its fate?

Hana, Solo :hi:
Perhaps the situation is less desperate for Purple than you fear. :puzzled:

There is this article (written in French):

Wintering birds of the Baie de I'Etoile (Nouadhibou-Mauritania) and surrounding areas
January 2010
Guy JARRY, Jean-Philippe SIBLET & Amadou LY

Abstract:
The “Baie de I'Etoile” is located in the northern sector of Cape Blanc near Nouadhibou (northern Mauritania). This site was ornithologically not well known before. It proved to be an important wintering area for waterbirds we observed from 11 to 20 December 2007. Data are given on bird distribution in that area. Several interesting records have been performed (third west Palearctic record of Abyssinian Roller Coracias abyssinicus, first record in Mauritania of Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva...). Urban pressure and non-sustainable fishery threat this important area and urge the creation of a marine protected area and a designation as a RAMSAR site.

:hi: Anna,
I read this paper days ago - nothing about black storks, also no in others papers
I have not yet found any sources mentioning black storks in this area
on photos there area more kind of waterbirds (I put here already some photos)
(black storks are not typical waterbirds, they are specific group - wading birds and I have already read a completely new classification)

Solo, I did not mean to say that it is a typical wintering area for Black Storks.
But I do read in that French article that white-breasted cormorants (Phalacrocorax lucidus), great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo), great white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus), Western Reef Herons (Egretta gularis), little egrets (Egretta garzetta), grey herons (Ardea cinerea), Eurasian spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia), black-bellied plovers (Pluvialis squatarola), Northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus), ... and many other species have been observed in that area. (Over 70 species) If they can find food there, Purple will probably not starve either...

Edit: Spoonbills, Egrets and Herons are also wading birds.
Edit 2: And so are Plovers and Lapwings. :D

Have a good night, Solo.

Solo ... I don't find your reaction nice to Anne.
All the time since Lila * landed * in Mauritania, you've been spreading panic ... the same smiley face over and over again.
Personally, I also follow your posts and I was very worried about what happened to the young stork.
Anne adds an article that is very interesting and shows that the situation is not that precarious.
You write, you know the * basic information * - then why are you spreading artificial panic all the time.

Personally, I'm happy for each article (and especially when they're summarized) because I don't have the time to read everything.
Why is it all always a competitive battle?
Why can't you just say; thanks for the information but I know it or I have already read it ... the rest of us don't know it!

Solo, you do a very good job here in the forum but this competition is tiring and not nice.

...
:hi: Sova,
"you've been spreading panic"? - I am only worried about PURPLE
(btw. good situation for water birds is not good situation for wading birds)

my opinion:
- if someone is interested in reading a wiki or a study, they can click on the link and read
- if you (or anyone else) don't have the time, the desire to read studies, just read the abstract at the beginning or the summary at the end
- this particular article says nothing about storks, and coincidentally just yesterday I read a study of plans in this area for the benefit of birds
- we have the thread What We Know About Black Storks - it is a good way to exchange more information outside the thread focused on the nesting of black storks and/or their migration

yes, I wasn't kind, but I don't forget the past; btw. when Anna, Jo, Michi treated me "not nicely", you didn't react
I don't want to comment on it anymore - this is thread about BS migration, not about relationship without Anne and me and about the roots, the reasons for the current situation

"Solo, you do a very good job here in the forum" - thanx Sova, Your words pleased me :-)
I like to do it very much (and to know all  about their life)
