Good evening.

Here are some photos of the birds in Purple's current area, taken by birdwatcher Robert Tovey.

Central Bay, Nouadhibou
"The single largest concentration of birds on Mohamed Vall's and my trip to Nouadhibou was undoubtably at central bay. The area is just south of the airport and just north of the fish factories.
There were literally thousands of birds. Mohamed said it reminded him of Banc d'Arguin National Park.

A dozen great white pelican were a good sighting.

"... The mix of waders was quite different in front of the fish factories.
A single red knot was seen along with several sanderling and many ruddy turnstone. ..."

red knot
Image
The red knot (Calidris canutus) (just knot in English-speaking Europe) is a medium-sized shorebird which breeds in tundra and the Arctic Cordillera in the far north of Canada, Europe, and Russia. It is a large member of the Calidris sandpipers, second only to the great knot. Six subspecies are recognised.
Their diet varies according to season; arthropods and larvae are the preferred food items at the breeding grounds, while various hard-shelled molluscs are consumed at other feeding sites at other times. North American breeders migrate to coastal areas in Europe and South America, while the Eurasian populations winter in Africa, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand. This species forms enormous flocks when not breeding. (Wikipedia)

sanderling with ruddy turnstone
Image
The sanderling (Calidris alba) is a small wading bird. The name derives from Old English sand-yrðling, "sand-ploughman".The genus name is from Ancient Greek kalidris or skalidris, a term used by Aristotle for some grey-coloured waterside birds. The specific alba is Latin for "white".
It is a circumpolar Arctic breeder, and is a long-distance migrant, wintering south to South America, South Europe, Africa, and Australia. It is highly gregarious in winter, sometimes forming large flocks on coastal mudflats or sandy beaches. (Wikipedia)

The ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) is a small wading bird, one of two species of turnstone in the genus Arenaria. The scientific name is from Latin. The genus name arenaria derives from arenarius, "inhabiting sand, from arena, "sand". The specific interpres means "messenger"; when visiting Gotland in 1741, Linnaeus thought that the Swedish word Tolk "interpreter" applied to this species, but in the local dialect the word means "legs" and is used for the redshank.
It is now classified in the sandpiper family Scolopacidae but was formerly sometimes placed in the plover family Charadriidae. It is a highly migratory bird, breeding in northern parts of Eurasia and North America and flying south to winter on coastlines almost worldwide. It is the only species of turnstone in much of its range and is often known simply as turnstone. (Wikipedia)

Fishmeal Factories Plunder Africa
“... The hungry machines of Africa Protéine are producing fishmeal ~ a nutrient-laden powder that fuels the $160 billion aquaculture industry. One of the world's fastest-growing food sectors, aquaculture is rapidly overtaking wild-capture fisheries as the biggest source of fish for human consumption.
From the shrimp ponds of China's river deltas to the salmon cages of Norway's fjords, the industry thrives by feeding fish to other fish. Its needs are so voracious, roughly 20 percent of the world's wild-caught fish don't even go near anyone's plate but are instead ground up to make fishmeal.
With relentless demand from China pushing fishmeal prices to record highs, companies have set their sights on West Africa as a new source of supply. From state-owned conglomerates to adventurous entrepreneurs, Chinese investors are racing to build new factories on the shores of Mauritania and its two neighbors to the south, Senegal and Gambia. ...”
https://www.voanews.com/africa/ocean-sh ... der-africa

Dirty fishmeal production in Nouadhibou, Mauritania
Stated by the Minister of Fishing as 'the price for development,' the city of Nouadhibou is experiencing grave health consequences from its fishmeal production.
Project details:
Based on a report from 2012, Nouadhibou was producing approximately 64,000 tons of fishmeal per year, accounting for only five factories of fishmeal production. Today (2018-05-14), with nearly 23 factories in Nouadhibou, the tonnage is likely much higher. The majority of fishmeal is exported to Russia, with some going to Ghana, Morocco, Sudan, Portugal, and other countries. The fishing industry represents about 55,000 jobs in Mauritania, with possibly 90% of these jobs stemming from artisanal fishing. But, the number of artisanal fishers is decreasing, in light of the pressure of industrial fishing on the resource base. The exports of fish products are estimated at 49% of total exports, amounting to 507 millions of USD in 2017. ...
Development of alternatives:
Local small-scale fisher people aim the protection of their fishing rights, and compensation from vessels of industrial fishing that violate their fishing rights in coastal zones. Meanwhile, they demand a strict control of fishmeal factories so that they comply with established regulations.
