PL - CNIG18 - hatched in 2019
TURKEY - İskenderun district, Hatay Province. The stork continued to fly. From its previous position, it headed straight south to the village of Silifke. It flew to the Mediterranean coast, but did not choose the southern direction through Cyprus. It turned northeast, flying over the bay at Mersin and over the Akyatan Lake. North of the lake, it turned southeast again and flew over Iskenderun Bay. Its last location is very close to the village of Harlısu.
Previous wintering area: Ethiopia

PL - 5749 Dobrzany - hatched in 2020
MAURITANIA - nchiri Region. Its location is in the same place (in the desert), north of Nouakchott (Nouakchott is the capital and largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahel. The city also serves as the administrative and economic center of Mauritania – wiki).
For the second time, the stork seems to be flying a very short distance to the northeast from its position. the stork sends data several times a day. Maybe it really flies but in more distant places it is at a time when we don't have data. Or maybe it's just a transmitter failure.

thanx for all news
Hana, can you ask, pls if the stork really flew over the Gulf of Mersin (above the open water) and continued over the Gulf of Alexandria or İskenderun (over the open water) - I hope they have detailed locations (it's an unusual - to me unknown - flight route)
map by Hana with my additions (yellow)
The Levantine Sea is the easternmost part of the Mediterranean Sea (wiki) - pic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levantine ... ne_Sea.jpg and Gulf of Mersin is in the northeast of the Mediterranean Sea between the gulfs of İskenderun and Antalya (wiki) -pic e.g. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Em ... ampled.png
5749 Dobrzany - I am very curious, but I am not optimistic (maybe we have already only little hope) - the locations are very similar to the situation with the stork 5771 (Sieraków)

I described the direction of flight according to the map. We have the data after twelve hours. So it is possible that it flew along the coast .....Solo wrote: ↑November 30th, 2020, 11:22 am Hana,

5749 Dobrzany - even here it is possible that during the day when we have not all data, it may fly .... We'll see.

Hello everyone
The (terrestrial) bird species on the peninsula visit these "community gardens" (= vegetable and fruit gardens) frequently. They all need to drink fresh water.
I read in this paper https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... ding_areas:
I translated it:
"The vegetable gardens, protected by a dense network of shrub hedges, constitute a precious haven for migrating birds and insects.
The presence of fresh water circulating on the surface to irrigate the patches of land helps to make these gardens valuable to wildlife. To our astonishment, the Northern pintail ducks (Anas acuta) wintering in the bay come in groups and during the day to drink in the garden. It is very likely that the presence of wintering ducks in the bay is only possible thanks to the presence of this fresh water. We also observed the Eurasian whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) there in small numbers, also attracted by the presence of fresh water."
Only seabirds do not need fresh water.
How Do Pelagic Birds Find Fresh Water At Sea?
"The short answer: they don’t.
Seabirds drink ocean water, and excrete the excess salt that would otherwise leave them dehydrated. Specialized glands, located above the beak and just under the eyes, filter salt ions from seabirds’ bloodstream. The glands also draw out just enough water to dissolve salt into a highly concentrated saline solution, which runs out through the bird’s nostrils. ..."

Edit:
I'm quite sure that Purple goes there to drink fresh water.

Dear Solo, I found it!
The Conservation Status of Eastern Mauritania's ephemeral wetlands and their role in the Migration and Wintering of Black Storks
(Ciconia nigra)
Black Stork observations over time
Lamarche observed an increase in the numbers of Black Storks in the Senegal Delta between 1960 to 1980 (LAMARCHE, 1988). Individuals and small groups have been recorded throughout this period at Nouakchott, Nouadibou, Aleg, Akjout, Kankossa and Mahmo˚dÈ (Ibid., 1988). individual Black Storks start to arrive in Mauritania in September, with small groups observed from November onwards. Maximum numbers are observed in the Senegal delta in December and January with groups of up to 50 individuals commonly observed. The latest sighting in the season was on the 19th April 1995 in the delta where 2 storks were observed on their northward migration (MESSAOUD et al., 1998). No ringed birds have been observed in the Senegal delta to date (Ibid., 1998).

Well of course not, Solo. (There are many!)
As you mentioned yourself: you also found and posted the below photo, on which many small water reservoirs are visible. (I added the arrows and the text)

As you say, it is hardly raining in that region. So to grow vegetables, they need to irrigate the gardens. I suspect that the "culture maraîchère" (or small-scale production of fruits and vegetables, frequently sold directly to consumers and restaurants) is located where water sources (wells) were already present. Edit: According to that study, birds make good use of the available water in and around the numerous reservoirs of the vegetable gardens to quench their thirst.
In the article that I quoted, I read that on the peninsula there are (at least?) 2 oases, so places in the desert where there is fresh water available (and therefore plants and trees).
"The oases:
Among the oases located to the west of "la Baie de l’Étoile", oases "1" and "2" were the subject of our ornithological investigations.
1. the vegetable gardens ...
2. much less cultivated, conceals large trees such as date palms and tall dense hedges of Prosopis. ..."
