Ame, thank you for explaining how close the microphone actually is. It makes sense then that unhatched egg chirps and peeps can be heard. My hearing is not what it once was in my youth.

I mentioned the notion that if the 3rd egg hatched, it would make all 3 hatches at 41 days each. My math was too quick and it was also wrong.

If the 3rd egg hatches, it would place the 1st egg at 40 days and the 2nd egg at 40 days and the 3rd egg at 37 days today, or 38 days tomorrow, or 39 days Monday, etc. It also means that the possibility is much greater that all 3 can hatch.

I'm still beyond amazement that any of the eggs hatched at all, considering how often and how long Milda was not incubating them and that the temperatures were in the low 40s (F) or +-6 (C) when she was away.

ame wrote: April 24th, 2021, 6:29 pm it is not so certain that we can distinguish between the egg talk and a chick's talk from outside the egg. earlier this morning (day?) i hear "egg talk" and the back of a chick was moving with the same rhythm of the calls.
it's not so easy.
It can quite reliably be distinguished when we see and hear two chicks eating - when one is busy receiving morsels and the other making pieep-pieep-pieep-sounds, and there's a chup-chup-chup-sound from an already perveived hole in the egg. :D

For the safest bets we need both our eyes and ears, beside a whole in an egg.

21.31.40 the woodcock
21.32.41 female tawny owl

21.45.01 and longer..... roe deer barking

21.45.15 a song trush (? i think) starts a wonderful and long lasting evening song, quite near
21.46.30 end of song trush's song

21.50.04 the roe deer still barking (with short interruptions)

several times also chick's voices were heard, but to these times i can't definitely say if it was either a chup-chup or a cheep-cheep - Milda covered the clutch

At the feeding 21.28 - 21.33 was no PIP to see on the egg. There was a dark spot, but that was a dropped food morsel, later removed by Milda. Before the dropped food the egg had no dark spot at the visible side.
21.30.32 visible egg side shows no PIP
21.30.35 food morsel dropped on egg by Milda
21.30.47 Milda took the food morsel off the egg

at this feeding the younger ate more than the older chick :D
21.32.22 the little one was leaning on the bigger one :innocent:

22.22.20 now clearly twittering of one chick

22.41.40 it sounds like raining
22.43.30 wind gets stronger
22.44.00 strong wind gusts and still the sound of rain
22.45.00 wind calmed, still raining
22.50.00 less rain or stopped

23.06.57 Milda got up, shakes the water off her plumage, ruffles feathers
23.08.03 - 23.10.00 one chick twittering and Milda moving slightly over the nest bowl, then settles in
23.10.12 - 23.10.34 a few more "peeps" of a chick (but not the "peeep-peeep" begging for food)
23.11.05 the "peeps" go over into demanding peeep-peeep, Milda hardly visible seems to stand

23:23 The sky on the right side, above the poop branch, is visible in a special way. Not like always...

Ame, Is there a special map for our new star?

:hi: Balistar - that's interesting.
I listened a lot today, and to my ears there were several moments of eggtalk , at times not distinguishable from the chicks' similar vocalizations but also the sort of soundbox-sounds which are typical for eggtalk. And I heard such sounds while the chicks were busy eating or crying for food... Tomorrow will show.
(I'm not all that enthusiastic about the viability of the third egg; the nest is small and the fish situation has seen better days - but I accept whatever comes and hope for the best.)
