News from the Estonian Wildlife Association (Eesti Metsloomaühing), Facebook:
"This morning we received a message that for the fifth day there is a juvenile black stork in a yard in Harju County (Northern Estonia). There were no visible injuries to the bird, but the informant was concerned that the bird did not fly anywhere to sleep, but remained on the ground all this time. It would have been an easy prey for the foxes that live in the area.
Consulting with specialist Urmas Sellis, we learned that it is characteristic of a black stork to save energy in bad weather, but it was necessary to go to check it, and the Environmental Board also asked for help to send someone there. The Eagle Club/Kotkaklubi had been aware of the same bird for about two weeks now, but at first it was thought that someone was feeding him in the area and the bird simply did not see the need to leave.
Our volunteers, Merilin Laud and Raili Vana went to a rare black stork. However, the stork glided away with the wind about 50 m away and disappeared from view. It was then decided to set up a trap to catch the bird with cunning, because it immediately became clear that the young bird had not been waiting there.
Just an hour of waiting and Merilin's wonderful trap with food worked, the bird was caught!
As the net did not fall on the bird at all, the informant was able to contribute to the capture of the bird, and under Merilin's guidance, the bird was "fixed and packed" in the car to hand it over to the Environmental Inspectorate. Further, young bird from Latvia will be studied by dr. Madis Leivits.
