By Laura Kons
The miracle of the rarest black stork rescue in the Red Sea today.
Black storks spend winter in Sudan and Ethiopia, their path lies through Egypt.
Kiters from Ukraine found this exhausted stork not far from their yacht, off the coast of Hurghada. The stork swayed motionlessly on the waves, wings spread. The guys swam up to him, the stork did not resist when they carefully brought him aboard.
The stork was carefully dried, fed with fresh fish, and given plenty of fresh water to drink.
The black stork rested for a long time and gained strength, examined the yacht, walked through the decks. And having gained strength, he flapped his wings and rose into the sky. There is a long way ahead.
Happy wintering, black stork!

Lake Kerkini National Park

Black storks (Ciconia nigra), more than 20 remain in the area of Lake Kerkini and the river Strymon. These birds do not migrate to Africa in the autumn and often they overwinter near rivers, lakes and various wetlands!

Thanks for the video, Liz. I was very impressed. I found the statement interesting; * the stork stands in its own way. *... which is probably true for this region.

Police NRW Heinsberg
"A large black bird is endangering traffic." That was the message our colleagues received on Friday afternoon. So they went to the bus station in Heinsberg, where the animal was spotted.
When the colleagues arrived, the long-legged bird was resting on disused tracks, where several attentive passers-by kept an eye on it. In order to avert further dangers for humans and animals, our colleague took two quick steps towards the bird and caught it with a bold move.
The colleagues took the exhausted-looking animal to a veterinarian shortly afterwards. She identified the bird as a black stork - a strictly protected species in Germany. She was surprised to see the stork in the area at this time of year.
The examination showed that the stork was severely hypothermic, but otherwise apparently unharmed. The vet first took the bird into her care and then informed a sanctuary. There the stork can be professionally nursed.
We wish our new animal friend a speedy recovery!

Where do Polish black storks winter?

For the first time, we present a summary of the wintering places of Polish black storks in a very large test, as up to 50 individuals arrived in the winter camps in 2017-2023. Unfortunately, only every second stork out of more than a hundred storks equipped with GPS-GSM loggers arrived at winter storage; the rest probably died on the way for various reasons. 79% of storks overwinter in Africa between the 4th and 16th equinoxes,
but mainly in the #Sahel region.
21% of birds chose #Little Asia and Southern #Europe for their winter stop. More than half of the storks flew the eastern path and wintered in #East Africa, most in #Ethiopia (N=15) and #Sudan (N=7). In West Africa, #Senegal and #Mauretania are the most frequently selected countries.
It only happened once that a Polish black stork wintered UNDER THE EQUATOR near #Victoria in Tanzania in December 2022. It was a truly unique individual from the #ArcheryArchery 2021 who spent his first winter in Sudan. He returned first to Ukraine in the summer of 2022 and to central Poland in June. In the fall he traveled more than 9,000 kilometers to fly beyond the equator! In the context of climate change, there are very interesting cases of wintering birds in southern Europe. However, three cases of winter camps in #Italy tend to concern individuals who either did not have enough strength (and courage) to fly the southern path over the open sea or migrated too late (Grzegorz).

Polish black storks arrive in winter fields in October and November, leave in April and May. The exception is wintering birds in Europe, which began their spring migration much earlier, in March (Skierka and Cuba). Favorite places in winter are the extensive river valleys, ditches and canals as well as the regularly formed waterfalls. Most individuals returned to their chosen winter destinations in the following years. However, some traveled long distances in search of more attractive places. The record breaker in #Nigeria traveled almost 800 km SW in the winter, presumably escaping #Harmattan, a strong and dry northeasterly wind that blows across the #Sahara towards #Guinea, in December.
