Exactly such behavior, with constant visits and greetings by the female, we saw at a Polish nest. Solo and I watched it intensely. that was not nice to watch. it was only sad. she also visited the little ones when their parents weren't there.

Once it was positive! she was there when the goshawk came and parents were away. But otherwise it was stressful for everyone!
Apart from that, also at the Latvian nest the second female (Zile) stayed the whole season. It was incredibly stressful there too. The little ones were constantly begging for food. They didn't realize at first that it was a strange female.
I hope that Janika 1 gives up.

So it looks like the visitor really is last year’s Janika ... she may have come a long way from some southern tip of Africa, meaning it could explain her arrival this late. Or after all, she may have been near the nest for some time, wondering about the sad situation.

Thank you all for documenting this complicated situation on the nest. I guess all the dear and engaged people involved must be close to heart attacks. This year's breeding season is full of distress and complications everywhere, be it BS, WTEs, ospreys. Here, there's a female PLUS, in Sigulda, the male is desperately searching a mate. (But of course, we cannot transfer BS to other places ...) I keep my fingers crossed for every bird.

Susanne, I agree with you! it seems to get more complicated every year. Nests and habitat are getting fewer and fewer! Humans takes too much territory from animals.
Believe me, I'm glad there is no breeding in Sigulda. did you see the trees they are dry ! Almost all are dead! The former wetland was drained by humans. What food are the storks supposed to find there?

We've got so many WTE's that you'll find them in impossible places! That means I'm not looking. I hear and see them. Funnily enough, no one responds to their calls. They circle nearby and call. My heart jumps every time. The breeding areas are in the forest.. in the dense forest! BTW: in nature they don't sound as loud as on the microphone of the nests
