Hi IceAge :hi:

Goshawks don´t pile food on the nest, but they use branch forks of nearby trees to store their prey and fetch it from there. I don´t know whether the male is also handing food over on direct way to the female on such a tree or it is only a storing place :puzzled:

Maybe they do this for the safety of their hawklets, to not attract any food competitors coming to the nest?

Thank you, Bea  . I thought something like that, but it's my first hawk's nest.
It makes sense so as not to attract predators.

From about 15.30 on.
What beautiful moments. Male got the time to show he sure wants to play a bigger role in the life of the chicks, than female allows him.
Was hard to choose the nicest pictures:

Image
Comes closer and closer, chicks try to touch his beak.
Image
Tries to roll them under his chest
Image
A proud, protective father
Image
Female arrived and quick as lightning male left.

That must have been an accident. An inattention of the female.
It almost looked as if he wanted to roll the chicks.

Okay, joking aside - I thought I couldn't see right!! :rotf:
It is news to me that a male is allowed to do this. I find it remarkable that H44 is allowed to stay in the nest for so long in Riga. now.

Well, the reason male Goshawks no longer come into the nest is actually self-defense. But later. As the juveniles grow up, they become extremely voracious. Female juveniles are sometimes larger than their tender fathers and could inadvertently injure them.

Otherwise I think that in the earlier stages it's just the classic roles - females feed and protect, males bring food (which later the stronger females do as well).
And females clearly show their partners what their job is.
There will certainly be individual deviations.

You are doing great here!!!
Thank you for your work!!!

Polly, thank you for answering.
So, it is about self defense. I never followed a Goshawk nest and was afraid maybe there was a chance the male would kill the chicks. But he was so sweet with them. So I understood there had to be another reason. And now I know, so thank you again.
