Re: Black Stork Nest in Karula 2022
Bonus is next to No. 3, how small and cute 3 looks.
22.18 No. 3 has shown what a nice wingspan he already has.
With Bonus, I have the feeling he has taken over the guard's post.
Ahhhh apparently it's time to get dressed up for the night's rest.
22.26 Bonus would like to fly.
I haven't seen any of the other stork babies sleep standing up. Bonus does it like an adult.
Good night to all

Today the chicks are 39, 33, 33 and 30 days old.
It was Bonus' 1st day on this nest
OrniTrack information
Today Karl II flew 153 km
Battery level 90 %
Karl II spent the night at the edge of a forest near a brook in a well-known feeding site 9 km from the nest.
His working day starts at 03:56. He visits that brook, stays there until about 05:20 and then flies on to a marshy area (with a brooklet) between two lakes about 25 km from the nest. He looks for food at that spot between 05:46 and 08:51. Then he flies to the nest, making a few small detours.
At 09:58 Karl II reaches the nest.
He flies to a brook at the edge of a forest about 6 km from the nest. He stays there until about 11:30. Next, he flies further to another brook about 22.5 km from there. He fishes in that brook until about 14:50. He flies - a bit zigzagging - to the nest.
At 15:39 Karl II reaches the nest.
He flies to a stream which flows into a lake in a forest, about 8 km from the nest. There he fishes until about 17:10. He crosses the lake towards the nest and looks on the other side for food until about 18:10. Then he flies back to the nest.
At 18:17 Karl II reaches the nest.
He flies to a (fish?)pond about 9 km from the nest. There he forages until about 19:50. He flies to the nest.
At 20:02 Karl II reaches the nest.
He returns to the same (fish?)pond about 9 km from the nest.
At 20:36 (last known data) I still see him near that pond.
Good night, everyone!
Many thanks for all contributions!
Good night, storklets.
#3, why did you poop on your new friend? Is it your marking, a proof of ‘ownership'?

they are sleeping... one of them is breathing very heavily, panting like a steam locomotive.
edit: i made a sample of this.
there's also a woodcock's voice and a cuckoo calling (at least one).
i agree with the later comments (see blow): it was not Bonus. Bonus was in the centre front.
(for comparison i found a video with a steam locomotive. turn down the volume: the whistle blows very loud in the beginning.

23.47 and earlier.
That fast breathing worries me. There is a clicking sound with each breath. Just now it is the breathing of the chick on the left of the group with head facing left.
Does anyone know what the temperature is in the forest, high up on the nest?

I think it's Bonus. This click breathing can also be heard in the video above. I thought it was something technical with the microphone. But if you can locate it, it's probably coming from a chick.
Yes, it clicks with Bonus's breathing motion.
edit: no, not sure

I watched each bird and the clicking and fast breathing matched the movement of that one on the left . If it is very hot there he will not be used to those conditions. Hope it cools down soon and he feels easier.

Thanks, Anne.
20C is not hot. Bonus's first day after such an adventure may have made him feel a bit below par.
Swenja, I could not identify which storklet it was but I know you can identify each one in the dark without seeing them fully!

I looked at the breathing movement and compared the sound to the one in my video above.
Of course it can also be one of the other chicks. @Jo UK

There is still fast breathing and it is by one on the left, whose body movements match the sound. No clicking now - ummm?
I think I will go to bed and believe that the morning brings good health for all.

The chick breathes with an open beak. But it's not that hot. Can ingested food cause such noises? It's been a while since the feeding.
Yes, it's late. Now we don't solve it.
Good night!
