Re: Goshawk Nest in Riga 2022
Very interesting part in the afternoon...
15:07 - 16:01
We hear shouts.
I think H21. Their calls sound urgent as they often do, but there are these subtleties...the long drawn-out tone before the fast calls mostly means that H21 feels under pressure. It's not for H44 - that sound is for strangers.
It means that in the stillness of the afternoon an unwanted visitor has arrived.
H21 defends their territory.
15:59:49 Fluttering noises and a sound that could mean full or almost physical contact.
(we hear a whimper beforehand)
One last call 16:00:49 - 59
It seems settled.
Rest follows for the rest of the day. H21 has indicated that they claim this territory and I think their claim has been respected (for now).
Don't worry....everyone involved will be fine.
I was wondering if it's the cub again?
H21 also has soothing sounds at the end of her warning. She wants to warn - don't fight. ?
Good night,
take care of yourselves.

Urban goshawk populations are subjected to a possibly more polluted diet in the city but in return it allows them to raise and take out more chicks than in the outdoor field. Hunting accidents and others can cause casualties and what we don't know is how these changes of partners resolve, I think that depending on the season in which it occurs and if it is the male or the female the consequences can be different.
Naturalists who follow the population of goshawks in Riga will have more data but also the observation of individuals and reading of rings is quite widespread almost everywhere and much more in the city of Riga.
If an individual in a couple is left alone, they should not have problems pairing up again if it is at the right time.
De Boka and Luijs said that nothing was known about the causes of the pair's disappearance, however Margo remained in the area, changing males, although last year her adult plumage partner could have been the young from the previous year. They edited a little book of this couple with her individuals where perhaps there are more clues from there my reflection on her.
I haven't had time for observations today and I'll track the ending from your last noted time.
Of the imitations it is known that the jay and the starling do it above all.
Cheers

To my delight, I came across this channel today.
The real nature lover has passed away, but there seems to be "someone" who is now passing on his life's work via channels.
Sparrowhawk
I think not much different from couple behavior
Nice to see...
(viewtopic.php?p=883030#p883030)
Since I'm on vacation in Denmark right now, I'm particularly touched.
Somewhere many years ago these recordings were made. There are more nice videos there.

Not much going on today... Quiet and soft snow covers the grove.
Team Jay happily twittered through the area.
10:54 - 56 times Jay, times Goshawk. Today he didn't feel like a cat and a buzzard.
Team Goshawk sure signs:
11:39 both can be heard
11:58, 12:31 Jay with Goshawk's call again
12:35:43/44 A goshawk exits the tree. Good to hear the starting signal.
No shouts before - he just stood there quietly.
14:51:41 'Gjak' (sounded like in the tree) ...nothing before, nothing after
There are no further snowfalls reported for the time being. But temperatures will drop significantly towards the end of next week.

Good morning dear sova , Emiliano!
The pine marten seems to be a special winter visitor. He pays one visit per winter.

It seems to me that not only we but also the couple are active very early today.
I'd better start recording now.
07:55:50, '53
'56:05 First gentle contact sounds
08:14:25 One of the two is approaching the 'meeting point'/'handover point'. Anyway, H44 and H21 like to head to this place together.
Both are very excited in their calls.
08:15:07 The second lands.
Both can be heard until 08:16.
08:22:44 Fluttering in the grove.
'22:56 landing noise i
Nest tree and a near 'Gjak.
08:23:19/20 Both flutter back into the grove.
'23:25/26 ...and back to the nest tree (below the nest)
'24:24/25 both back in the grove
At first I wondered if there was a third Goshawk. Both sounded excited. But probably the couple is just intense with each other this morning.
There is the best possibility of sightings. As also mentioned in the last few days.

08:29:22 - 26 clicks and we hear H21
'30 cracking again followed by short soft calls
08:31:32 - 39 The couple can now be heard at a greater distance.
08:35:37 That was only one lap - at least one is sitting close again.

Good morning Polly, Sova and everyone.
I'm glad you're here again. .The marten is a regular visitor in winter as you say. Here in Spain it is in the northern area.
Activity continues in the morning and night visibility is favored by snow. Thanks for your job.
He is also very brave and enters the villages for the sparrows.
Greetings to all

The Sparrowhawk is a species very similar to the goshawk but there are notable differences, just look at the legs and fingers it has. In several known places it has entered to breed in the same area as the goshawk when it has not tried to breed that year, they may be close but it is usual for the sparowhak to move away.Sparrowhawk

...compared to Goshawk like matches....just look at the legs and fingers it has.
The Sparrowhawk is very efficient at bird feeders. Once tracked down, he will never leave the laid table.
09:56 - 10:08 Some flight movements.
At 09:56/57, two larger birds flew back from the factory premises back into the edge of the grove (the first of them with a stopover on the yellow pole).
Not sure but very likely it was the couple. I also think curious crows are possible.
10:08 A crow calls and also a goshawk. We also see him to the left of the thick trunk in the background.
'11 crow nagging. You are upset.
10:15:49 - 53 tender sound check up of the couple
10:39 It's full of tits. Cannot be seen but heard in the nest tree.
'40 A goshawk leaves the tree. The chirping rears up again.
A few seconds later he flies over the tree again
.

The couple is apparently staying in the grounds...
11:35 a lonely 'Gjak'
'39 Crow and Goshawk in dialogue
'51 It gurgles
Flight movement comes up and both H's call.
12:08 More shouts, which are swallowed by the snow shovel.
15:42:29 - 37 urgent calls

Hello together
Today the couple had a quiet day.
I didn't even hear the first sounds until 12:03.
One of the two flew again into a low tree at the tree line. Calls, appears to be preening, and twists into various positions on the branch.
waiting?
Nothing happens. No response to his attempted contact.
12:08 Flies back to the grove.
12:45, 15:25 - 28
...excited calls partly at the possible territory border. There seemed to be a need for regulation there.

Hello Polly and everyone.
In the last two days nothing has been heard in the morning in the first hours of light.
Today at 12:06 there is a stir at the base of the nest and the trees on the left, crossing two in flight without being able to specify if it is them or not. (I didn't think so), but just a little later one of the H's sounds energetic and close (12:07:17).
It seems that in the cold season, almost winter, although they continue to be active early, they delay their activity closer to central hours.
In my city, the cathedral pigeons gather in flocks that come out in two peaks: at dawn and dusk in spring, summer and part of autumn, and in autumn-winter and early spring reduce it to a single time closer to noon or something further from the first hours.
Greetings and see you tomorrow.

Hello Emiliano and everyone!
Thank you for being there.
I felt the day dominant again by crows.
They often roam the grounds as if to say, "I'll find you...I'll find you." and then loudly announce: "I've got you!".
10:09, 12:14 (extremely angry at the nest tree), 15:19.
15:19, '23 then also excited calls from our couple.
15:45 - 50 Both often heard and one seen at the 'meeting point'.
('49 here clearly H44)
16:14/15 both to be heard for the last time for the day (I think).
Regardless of the intensity of their activities, it's always reassuring to know they're both present without a doubt.

10:07 three short sounds
10:23:17 H21 uses long high tone followed by short beeps
'23:51 again, a little more vigorously
Are there visitors or is she urgently calling H44?

In the further course of the day it remained largely unspectacular.
The usual inspections of crows
10:51/52
12:05/06 First Jay, then crows
15:05, '17 vocal marks of H21
...finally 15:52 crows
