Re: Following Karls' Families
Good morning to all!
Tommy is a very special stork. I watched him since he was an egg. I remember how he fell out of the nest during branching and managed to fly back after spending a night on the ground. Luckily that area was relatively safe.

Good morning everyone
it's a very beautiful picture.
And we hope for the surprise of seeing one or even more of our young storks from the Karula nest again one day.
Many thanks

A few recent sentinel-2 maps showing Waba's area.
(I tried to paste in yesterday’s track as accurately as possible)

Thank you, Jo!
Urmas changed the settings for Waba. We now receive all the night data too! The transmitter is operating around the clock.
The batteries of these new transmitters seem to be particularly good.
Our Waba appears to be finding lots of food on "his" island in the Nile.
Foraging on the eastern banks of El Fung Island
Perhaps the name Fung originates from this:
Funj Dynasty, also spelled Fung, line of kings that ruled in the Nilotic (relating to the River Nile) Sudan of Eastern Africa in the 16th–19th century. ...

Funj Sultanate
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funj_Sultanate
Waba's night area, slightly north of El Fung, near a canal in the green belt along the Nile
Recent short wave infrared composite view (SWIR)
Short wave infrared (SWIR) measurements can help scientists estimate how much water is present in plants and soil, as water absorbs SWIR wavelengths. Short wave infrared bands (a band is a region of the electromagnetic spectrum; a satellite sensor can image Earth in different bands) are also useful for distinguishing between cloud types (water clouds versus ice clouds), snow and ice, all of which appear white in visible light. In this composite vegetation appears in shades of green, soils and built-up areas are in various shades of brown, and water appears black. Newly burned land reflects strongly in SWIR bands, making them valuable for mapping fire damages. Each rock type reflects shortwave infrared light differently, making it possible to map out geology by comparing reflected SWIR light.

Unfortunately, Bonus did not send any data today either.
Possibly s/he is currently flying south over the Eastern Desert.
We will need some luck to receive data.

Hi everyone ,
while I hate not hearing from Bonus, this was to be expected... Let's just hope s/he is safe, and that maybe we're lucky and s/he reappears again before reaching his/her destination.
We're really lucky to have daily news from Waba for the time being, though.

Good day to you all ,
I had some problems reaching the forum and received a PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR message some minutes ago. I guess, if this is a larger issue, I'm not the first to notice it. Maybe it was only on my side. But I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Hulbi, this afternoon I had a similar problem on my iPad.
I could not access the forum and got this message:
'Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server'.
(However, I was able to open other websites without any problems)
On my computer, looduskalender seems to function well so far.

Thanks Francesca and Anne,
I fear we will no sooner hear from Bonus again than (hopefully) next March or so.
But s/he'll be in our thoughts all this time, and who knows, maybe there'll be a surprise...

You could be right, Hulbi.
Perhaps Bonus will not reappear on the radar until next spring.
(But that would be rather in May. Juvenile BS usually stay in their winter quarters about 4-6 weeks longer than the adults)
This is going to be a long wait!

Hello Anne, hello Hulbi ,
I do hope that little Bonus will be back on the radar soon?
At least temporarily.
What will be in April/May next year? We will then already observe the 2023 brood and will we hardly see or hear anything from Bonus? I don't want to imagine.
Good night everyone

Good morning, everyone!
UDU
Urmas sent us some good news about little Udu:
"... Just got information from Ornitela. Udu's transmitter has connected to GSM tower yesterday in Serbia, Nish.
It is a bit late for Black Stork to be there, but currently there is air temperature about plus 10 degrees. ..."
Thank you, Urmas and Ornitela!
Udu still has a very long journey ahead of him. But I guess that departing well-fed is more important than being 'on schedule'.
Niš is the third largest city in Serbia and the administrative center of the Nišava District. It is located in southern part of Serbia.
Geography - The road running from the North, from Western and Central Europe and Belgrade, down to the Morava River valley, forks into two major lines at Niš: the southern line, leading to Thessalonica and Athens, and the eastern one leading towards Sofia and Istanbul. ...
Climate - Niš has a humid subtropical climate, but with continental influences. Average annual temperature in the area of Niš is 12.4°C. July is the warmest month of the year, with an average of 23.1°C. The coldest month is January, averaging at 0.9°C.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niš
Which way will Udu fly?
Via Turkey, like last spring?
Or again via Greece, Crete and the Mediterranean Sea, like in the fall of 2021?
Bon voyage, Udu! Take good care.

A comparison of the circular fields: on the left Google Maps view, on the right a recent (2022-12-06) Sentinel SWIR view.
Four new circular fields have since been created in this location.
Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), 2022-12-06
The normalized difference water index is most appropriate for water body mapping.
