I watched it three times, but it is very difficult to say. :puzzled:
The calls sounded like Indigo and some moments later he arrived with the undertaken prey. Maybe he wanted land on the edge, then saw the parent with prey and flew away again.

Video Rubus (Indigo was in the box)
it contains three camera views. Ledge Cam you can see Indigo watching Rubus. If a parent tried to land, Indigo would scream. Tower cam view, Di is seen flying away, Rubus arrives and attempts to land, he is followed by an adult.

and news by Cilla under the stream:
NEWS 27th November 2022 1300 h
While our small search party was looking in the woods below the tower, a falcon flew out towards the tower. As I couldn't see Indigo in the box any more, I assumed the bird we saw flying was Indigo BUT Indigo was in the box (at the back), so it was a different falcon. On tower cam, at that time, this same bird was seen to harrass Xavier into leaving the microwave, so I believe it was Rubus. This is typical juvenile behaviour, not something Diamond would do. She would land on the roof. Hopefully, we will soon see all four falcons on the roof together, so we can be sure.

I have received a lot of criticism about why Rubus was not put back in the box. These are never easy decisons to make with wild birds, but I accept full responsibility for what eventuates. There was some discussion that he might have contracted canker (in which case he would surely be dead by now) and I got conflicting advice on that. If he does get sick and gets found, he will taken into care for veterinary assessment and rehabilation if necessary. I will let you know if and when that happens, but I am now more optimistic with this sighting.

It is definitive not Indigo, I really hope it was Rubus. We have to wait if he comes again.

Thank you for your great work!

Birdfriend, seira :hi:

very sad news! our little Rubus is dead  soar high my little cute screaming bird.

NEWS 29th November 2022
Bad news about Rubus. His body was found today by one of our medical staff (who also watch the livestream). Cause of death is unknown. I thought at first broken neck because of the angle, but it seemed intact. I have asked the vet for an autopsy, but she said that it is too far gone, so it looks like he died a few days after last seen on 23rd November. That's a pity as I would like to have known whether it was caused by trichomoniasis (canker) as has been suggested by some watchers. We've never had a case here, but the parasite could be present in the local pigeon population and transferred in the prey.

Just I've read the news, can only cry.
In this year always the little fighter can't made it. I liked this guy so much, he gave me some laugh.
Personally I'm glad when this year 2022 will be gone, it was not a good one for me and my family.

I was almost sure, that we had him in the box again. I watched this video yesterday.

Fly free little Rubus, you will be unforgetable. Nature is tough and harsh.

I took that pic from here: https://falconcam.csu.edu.au/2022/11/29 ... ound-dead/

NEWS 1nd December 2022
Rubus's body was found 29 November by one of our staff near where he was last seen, several hundred metres behind the tower. Cause of death (from vet X ray) was likely to be a broken neck. The clavicle (collarbone) was clearly broken, and the neck appeared to have a thin fracture too. So most likely a flying accident with instantaneous death. Possibly hit by a car, but that seems unlikely as it wasn't that close to the road and the road closest to that spot was a steep bend in the campus, where cars travel very slowly.

NEWS 15th December 2022
The egg was removed on 13th and I 'candled' it tonight with a torch. My opinion is that it was fertilised, but the chick died in the egg. The other possibility is that it has a very thick shell. I shall put the photo up on the website when I have a decent photo. I shall give it to the Australian Museum and they will hopefully provide more information.

Indigo has managed to remove the ribbon of grass(?) that had caught around his neck. He is doing very well, chasing his parents to catch prey in the area (witnessed on tower cam). He fledged on 11 November at 41 days.

The other juvenile, Rubus, did not make it. He fledged at 46 days. His body was found on 29/11 and X-rays showed a broken collarbone and probable broken neck. So most likely a flying accident with instantaneous death.

There is also a slim possibility that he was suffering from a parasitic disease called trichomoniasis, which falcons sometimes catch from infected pigeons. Unfortunately, the body was too decomposed to test for this. When it was first mooted, I asked an Australian falcon expert to watch Rubus and he thought he was fine, just a bit immature, so we cannot be sure. He was seen several times flying around the campus, albeit not that well.

29. December

News from Cilla Kinross about the third egg:
NEWS 29th December 2022
The egg was removed and I 'candled' it with a torch. The egg has a slight leak through a small crack, but is otherwise intact. Despite using a very strong LED torch, I could see nothing, so I think the eggshell is too thick. It may be that the chick simply could not emerge. I'll offer it to the Australian Museum.
So, I was right, the eggshell was to thick. The poor lil has fighted without any chance...
