UDU
Again, Udu's transmitter tried to connect, but unfortunately failed to send new location points.
It is such a pity that the transmitter is not working properly, especially now that Udu is on the move.
Hopefully Ornitela and Urmas will be able to help again.
May little Udu fly towards Turkey, and not attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea again.
Last data received by GPRS: 2022-12-10
Next data session expected: 2022-12-12
In yellow: Udu's autumn migration in 2021. S/he crossed the Mediterranean from Crete to Egypt on 25 October 2021. Udu flew for slightly over 8 hours (450 km in about 8 hours!) over the open sea (very fortunately assisted by a strong tail wind)

The day before yesterday, 8 December 2022, Udu was in the vicinity of Niš, in Serbia

Hello!
Maybe Udu will stay closer to Europe in the second migration. Last year was a long and difficult flight.
For example, BS Skierka/Žolty flew to Saudi Arabia in the first year, but stayed in Northern Greece starting with the second migration.

Yes, that would also be a good idea for Udu, I think.
Fingers crossed!
Hopefully we will receive an indication of where Udu is located, every now and then.
Edit:
Already last year we hoped that Udu would find the Lake Kerkini National Park, situated in one of the most northern parts of Greece, close to the border with Bulgaria, where many birds winter, including storks. S/he did not find or visit that place. Maybe this year s/he will.

Hello everyone and many thanks to Bea and Anne
little Waba has many choice of retreat: the river, the mainland, the island, the island in front of the island ... The settlements nearby obviously do not bother them? Maybe she winters there. Then we always know that she still exists.
All the best for Udu, maybe he will find Kerkini National Park after all?
What you can find out here! Also very interesting: the information about the changing conditions for bird. migration as well as the review of events in the past.
Finally, only good wishes for the little bonus. Maybe we will be lucky and he will give us an Easter egg in 2023 by flying into a photo trap like Tommy!
For all a happy weekend

Hello everyone
Thank you, Bea
Waba appears to be flying at a speed of 55 km/h towards circular fields in the desert.
Further zooming in (sentinel) reveals there are 8 (visible) fields, of which only one is currently growing crops
False color composite (2022-12-06)
A false color composite uses at least one non-visible wavelength to image Earth. The false color composite using near infrared, red and green bands is very popular (a band is a region of the electromagnetic spectrum; a satellite sensor can image Earth in different bands). The false colour composite is most commonly used to assess plant density and health, since plants reflect near infrared and green light, while they absorb red. Cities and exposed ground are grey or tan, and water appears blue or black.
Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI) (2022-12-06)
Is fossil water being used to irrigate these fields?
The distance to the Nile is too big to be river water.
What Is Fossil Water? Geology and Renewability
Fossil water refers to underground reservoirs formed during the last glacial ice age. Also known as petrowater or paleowater, fossil water borrows its name from paleontology. Like a traditional fossil, fossil water is trapped in rock — sometimes for millennia.
These aged aquifers acquired their water from melting ice and prehistoric lakes that pooled into subterranean layers of water-porous rocks, silt, and sand. Over time, those layers were covered with more sediment, effectively sealing off the water from Earth’s surface for tens of thousands of years.
Just 70 years ago, farmers began drilling into fossil aquifers, pumping water to previously dry climates worldwide. Today, billions of people rely on fossil aquifers for their drinking water and as irrigation to grow staple food crops. …
In Africa, the non-renewable Nubian aquifer will have to support an estimated 731 million people by 2050.
Experts already predict that more than 60% of people in the world will experience water scarcity by 2025, and thanks to global warming, increasing temperatures will only make matters worse. …

Google Earth has the below picture. It is apparently not very far away from those circular fields.
I don't know if the photo was correctly positioned on the map.

Mapcarta says:
Jabal ad Duqun is a peak in Sudan and has an elevation of 342 metres.
Jabal ad Duqun is situated close to Nuzayzah and Affat.

Thanks Francesca
Birdmap provides an update for Udu.
Since birdmap also uses the OrniTrack data, and no new location point appeared in OrniTrack since 8 October, I think this update was done manually and gives an approximation of Udu's area on 8 December. (North of Niš in Serbia)
OrniTrack still shows the location near the village Boccadiganda in Italy.
May little Udu be healthy and well, and send us an update soon.
Thanks Francesca

Good evening,
and thanks for all informations and writings!
It's great that Waba has found a good place to herself/himself , and it's very great that Udu has finally moved forward. Hopefully we'll hear something about our little Bonus soon as well.
So, we have three very great little black storks, but it would be so nice to hear some news also about Eedi, Janika, Kaia and Karl II. I hope they all are fine and well!

Today, Udu's transmitter once again tried to connect, but did not send any new location points.
So we do not know where Udu is, except that he is somewhere in an inhabited area (with a GSM tower not too far away).

Good evening everyone,
good that Waba keeps us entertained, since Bonus seems to have decided to stay out of the spotlight for the time being.
What a pity that Udu's transmitter doesn't work well, though.
