A lovely, serene morning at Loch of the Lowes now, though with a sad announcement.
In recent weeks we have attempted to return to pre-covid norms by allowing free access to our hides after hours. Unfortunately due to various forms of anti-social behaviour overnight we are left with no choice but to lock the hides overnight from now on.
This is to protect the integrity of our hides and the wider reserve, to allow for access for visitors, and to safeguard the well-being of staff and volunteers. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of Loch of the Lowes and the clean-up necessary to open this morning was beyond our reasonable expectations of them.

Happy winter solstice on and all! Today marks the shortest day (some 9 hours shorter than midsummer), the longest night & a welcome return for people & wildlife alike to the light!

We couldn't have asked for better weather for the annual 'pimping' of the osprey nest!
As well as checking the health of the tree, Sandy (one of the Trust's expert tree climbers), helped the returning ospreys by digging out the stubborn couch grass, and gave the webcam some TLC.
Last year our breeding male LM12 returned on March 13th and our breeding female NC0 on 23rd March. When do you think they will return this year?

We are absolutely delighted to hear that the young osprey that fell from its collapsed nest (and tree) at the Balgavies Loch reserve last season, has been spotted and photographed by Jean-marie Dupart in Senegal.
The youngster known by its ring code as Blue 640 , was at the centre of a large rescue mission last summer involving local walkers, the Warden, Scottish Wildlife Trust staff and expert tree climbers from the Tayside and Fife Raptor Study Group.
After it's impromptu crash landing, the juvenile was kept safe, until it was checked out for any injuries and then reinstated in a temporary nesting structure nearby. It then officially fledged successfully the next day , before leaving on migration in the late summer. (You can read more about the event in the blog link below this post.)
The mortality rate of young osprey is extremely high, and it is not until they return to the UK for the first time as 2 year olds, having negotiated a few migrations, that their survival rate markedly increases.
It just goes to show the value of colour ringing ospreys so that their distribution, migration routes and wintering grounds can be monitored.
Here's hoping we see 'The Bairn' next summer!

It's one year exactly since our breeding male osprey 'LM12' landed on the nest, surprising us with his earliest ever arrival!
Previous years' return dates are;
2012 - 30th March
2013 - 24th March
2014 - 21st March
2015 - 22nd March
2016 - 25th March
2017 - 16th March
2018 - 29th March
2019 - 15th March
2020 - 21st March
2021 - 21st March
2022 - 13th March
With the beautiful snow of yesterday, and the constant rain and driving NW winds of today, we don't blame him for taking his time.
All being well, we hope to see him settle back on the nest in the next wee while!

We are delighted to see the return of our breeding female osprey NC0 at 7:43 this morning, returning for her fourth breeding season! She certainly had her skates on this year!
Whilst it is usually the male that arrives first to do some housekeeping on the nest, it isn't always the case.
Our regular breeding male LM12 has arrived anywhere between the 13th March and 29th March, so still plenty of time for him to return to the nest- maybe this year he didn't fancy doing all of the DIY!
NC0 is home
and her blue ring is a bit damaged...

What a day!
We've had that 'osprey feeling' for a few days now, and thought we have one arriving back in the next few days, but to have both our breeding osprey arrive within hours of each other is fantastic!
Let the season's drama begin!

Good morning folks! Another morning full of bird song on the reserve, Spring is certainly 'springing'!
We are aware of some challenges with the livestream currently being a bit unstable - please bear with us whilst the experts try to get to the bottom of the gremlins causing the drop outs.
Meanwhile, enjoy these cracking close ups of our breeding female NC0 (top) and LM12 (bottom)

Evening folks! A wee note to let you know that we will be powering down our internet for the next 45 minutes or so to try and reset and stabilise our livestream. Hopefully this will settle things down, if not IT support will be investigating next week.
Don't worry, any important action is captured and recorded at our end.
Meanwhile enjoy this beautiful close up of NC0 preparing her nest.

With the birds being back 11 days we can begin to anticipate egg laying. It is possible for osprey to lay within 10 days mating successfully, often the day after arrival. However, last year NCO laid a full 20 days after arrival. It could be imminent, it could equally be more than a week away. When do you think we will see our first egg of the season; make your predictions in the comments.

Another Easter delight this morning, with egg no. 3 arriving right on cue at 9:10am. NC0 seems to like her sunny morning laying times!
Egg number 3 is the palest of the trio, as is often the way with eggs being laid in sequence. It is likely that this is her full clutch now, but osprey have been known to lay 4 eggs on occasion.
