This is a good discussion and there are many ways to consider it.
At the end, my view is that each of us, indivdually, will reach a decision as to what we want to do. I will not refrain from making a donation just because I cannot save all of them.
We know about the Karl II and Kaia nest, and the young about to hatch. So I will continue to donate to that cause.
Each of us makes our own decision according to our personal inclinations.
We can't do ALL that may help. We can choose what help we want to give.

I agree with you, Jo, we cannot save all of them, but we can help those who have somehow come into our lives.

If there are 1 million hungry and unspayed stray cats in Belgium, obviously I cannot save them all. But if I help (or adopt) 1 or 2 of them, and if many other people do the same, the problem eventually gets solved and the suffering ends.

As Kaia noted, Karl II still hasn't taken care of the nest edge.

Hello @Sabsy :hi:
We can't hear the chicks yet. This makes me very insecure.
I sometimes listen with headphones, but so far just not sure what I hear.
We have to be patient. (But I haven't either)

Kaia loosens the nest bottom. She touches an egg and covers the eggs again.

Image

Some peeping can be heard. I'm not sure if it's from the eggs.

20:53 The peeping comes from the eggs.
The forest bird concert becomes quieter. I hope the little one doesn't fall asleep right away, so we'll hear later.

Image

It's a faint peep quack.

Kaia stands up and flapping with her wings. The eggs are so white!

She does ps and rolls the eggs.

Kaia loosens the nest floor and arranges the nesting material somewhat.
Then she covers the eggs again.

Yes, Swenja, those were undeniably egg “quacks”! :headroll:

It takes time, a lot of effort and patience for such a little chick to hatch!
Come on, little one, you can do it!

Father Karl always lends a helping hand by handling the eggs a little less gently... That helps the little cracks that the chick makes inside the egg crack a little further! 8-)

And mother Kaia helps when doing the back and forth movement while sitting.

Many many thanks for all your wonderful work, Swenja!

22:30 night vision

Hello @Anne7 and @asteria :hi:

I hope we can still hear something in the stillness of the night. But I think the babies are sleeping now.

23:02 But it can be heard! Little peep and quack
So then the stain may have been a small hole after all.

And I thought all day I was hearing ghosts.

This is a very difficult discussion, and each of us obviously hopes that all (wild) animal species prosper.
The ethics surrounding the fish basket are complex as several have noted. I don't think there is a position which will satisfy everyone, including the storks. For me, the best answer is to feed when there is enough money and manpower (ladypower, too).

Even in the human world we are not able to feed everyone what they need.
In the stork world, some may die due to lack of food. I'm glad we are a community who cares about storks and makes the food basket a possibility. My personal lifelong theory has been that if I am 60% in favor of something then it is a good decision. There will always be the 40% I have to live with.

Perhaps the larger question is should we continue discussing this question here?

Thanks, Helen44.
This is a good place for this discussion, but whether we can learn more from further discussion of the same - I don't know. Each individual must work out what he/she will decide. For now, we know of some black storks that need our help. Those of us who want to will give that help.
