I get a twist in my stomach every time I get the email for new posts. I'm afraid for those little cuties. I know it's natural when there isn't enough food; I've become too sensitive to loss when there is an animal involved.

Karl II gave some fish. They were bigger pieces. #3 and #4 were sitting in a favourable position.



But #1 and #2 also got something. #1 secured a big piece right away. #2 tasted but did not eat the fish.
Karl II took back some food.



#3 took a bite here and there.
#4 tasted whether #3's toes also tasted as delicious.

Kaia pulls #4 on the head.



It may be that Kaia did it this time out of protection for #4.

Kaia cleaned up a lot of dirt after the snack from exactly the place where #4 wanted to peck with the beak.
The older chicks had picked pieces out of the porridge there before.
I would guess that it is not suitable for #4 to eat and that is why Kaia pulled on the head.

Like this: Kaia threw it out of the nest. She got it from where #4 wanted to peck.

Yes, maybe.

You could be right.
Kaia did not raise her feathers.
I think the position of her feathers might be a pretty reliable indicator of her state of mind.


But to be honest, I don’t like to see what continues to happen…

Kaia pulled the head of all the chicks last year. They all survived.
We see exactly that with Kaia every year, without it ever getting to the worst.

Personally, and I emphasise this here, I will not immediately think of reduction.
