Good night all. :hi:

Thanks to all of you who have reported this beautiful couple.
The chicks, although they reduce their visits to the nest, are in the territory until the first dispersal occurs in September and possibly they can be heard or even seen later if the camera is open. (Being urban, I don't know if they can follow this behavior exactly or if they remain colonizing new territories in the city, as has already happened with a son of Alla and Ruudi).

I would like to know if in Estonia (perhaps there is more data in Tallinn) there is an autumn heat similar to the one we have noticed in the last two years in Riga. Although this question could go more towards biologists who follow this species in the style of Hunt, Urmas, Abel, Ulo Vali.

A pleasure to have followed you in recent years.

Greetings

Hellem, thank you for your contribution! It's nice to read something from 'this corner' again. :innocent:

First of all - I don't doubt this study.
Or as the saying goes: "Don't believe any study that you haven't done yourself."

I tried to understand it. No chance. My mind is too narrow to process these this flood from facts.
But I can't imagine that nature can be understood in bar charts per se. Nature is a force and interaction that we only understand afterwards. If we understand it, the development is already much further. I think that nature always overtakes us.

What I observe in Riga is that, at least during the breeding period, little prey is brought from their own breeding territory. What the rascals behind the camera eat... well.
Birds that are actually on the prey list live and breed there. The singing there is evidence of diverse biodiversity.
Is it possible that there are differences between breeding grounds and hunting grounds? Has Goshawk been proven to make this difference?
I couldn't tell that from the study. Or....at some point my head shut down. Maybe I didn't record it.

@sova, Hellem and all together - The stream is starting again this season. Image

The setting takes some getting used to. We're used to the good close-up view here, but perhaps there will be an opportunity to use it later?

Maybe Hellem can find out a little more? :book:

In any case, it's wonderful that Alla and Ruudi are doing well!
And Ruudi builds his castle in the snow as usual.

I have it.
It's a completely new nest.
Kanakullikaamera alustas uut hooaega uue pesa juures.

GT
The hen owl camera started a new season at a new nest. Chicken owls Alla and Ruudi decided to build a completely new nest this year, which is located behind the RMK Tartu office in the same test stand where they nested the previous three years.

The construction of the new nest is currently going on rapidly about 100 meters away from the old nest and is located in the trunk of a tall pine on the side branches. If the old nesting place was at a height of about 15 meters in the crown of a pine tree, the new nest is located as much as 23 meters above the ground
•••
Ruudi ja Alla on teadaolevalt ehitanud juba kuus pesa, millest kaks on olnud Raadil pesitsedes paplil ja üks haaval.

RMK taimla katsepuistus on praegu ehitatav pesa juba kolmas. Esimene pesa paiknes siin lehisel, teine pesa ehitati neli aastat tagasi männile ja on kanakullikaamera jälgijatele tuttav juba kaks pesitsushooaega.

Isaslind Ruudi on Tartu linnuhuvilistele tuttav 2016. aastast, siis tegutses lind Raadi kaitsealal ning sealt ta omale nimegi sai – Raadi Ruudi…Ridi-radi ralla…
GT
Ruudi and Alla are known to have already built six nests, two of which were on a poplar tree while nesting in Raad and one on a sapling.

The test stand of the RMK nursery is already the third nest under construction. The first nest was located here on a larch, the second nest was built four years ago on a pine tree and has been known to watchers of the hen owl camera for two nesting seasons.

The male bird Ruudi has been known to bird enthusiasts in Tartu since 2016, when the bird was active in the Raadi protected area, and that's where he got his name - Raadi Ruudi...Ridi-radi ralla...

I don't trust myself to have reliable documentation. I would like to support you but without sova it will be difficult.

In the video by @RMK we can see Alla and Ruudi pulling on a branch of the nest tree. The branch seems to bother both of them.

Today
The branch is gone. One of them disposed of it.

Hello goshawk fans!

It's great to see that the camera and forum are back up and running. Nice shots and detailed observations are starting to accumulate, and I hope that there will be a lot of them, because it’s not just exiting to watch but it is also providing important background information for GPS tracking and other research we carry out on goshawks in Tartu.

Ruudi still carries the GPS tag and it works fine. In fact, we tried trapping and tagging Alla as well, but she refused to wear a GPS :) Well, we appreciate her choice :) But thanks to this attempt, we discovered the new nest, so the camera was possible to move in time. The new nest is actually good news, because the supporting branches of the old nest were very weak and the increasing weight of the nest put it in increasing danger of falling. The new nest has strong supporting branches and is no longer in danger.

Happy spring with goshawks!

I am very proud of Alla.
That explains the accusatory looks into the camera.

Thanks for the words here.
I think it means a lot to many active members here when there is a sign from the "grassroots". Me definitely.
Thank you for this and for the commitment of the many nature lovers who spend a lot of time and energy on these and many other projects.

Question for Jo UK:
Is it possible to recreate this topic for 2024?

A new topic would be wonderful, especially with the newly created nest.
