Wow, thank you for the proper ring identification! I just checked - the ring number was somehow familiar to me - if this eagle had been here before: YES! On April 15, 2022. Ame did a summary of ringed visitors in 2022. And H 492 visited also in August this year. Seems to be a serious competitor, oh la la.

hello!
it has been quite stormy since yesterday evening. someone wrote in the YT chat a worried remark that the nest seems to be tilted to the left.
i made a pair of pictures for comparison to see how bad the inclination is.
the left side of the pictures is from 3 weeks ago, September 16th. the right side is from today. i tried to pick a quiet moment so that the tree would stand in its normal position. i drew horizontal lines across both pictures to make the comparison easier.

the top of the nest seems to be on the same level as earlier. on the left side there seems to be slightly more open space under the branch where the squirrel is sitting. some loose twigs have dropped. the right edge of the lawn has clearly moved to the left. this is unsettling indeed. it seems as if the top of the nest has slid to the left. :puzzled:
Image

the sliding of the topping of the nest is clearly visible in this picture: the edge of the lawn has moved to the left. some sticks have moved and some have dropped.
Image

this change has happened after yesterday. that is no wonder. it was stormy all night and all this morning and it still is very windy.
Image

the eagles need to start nestoration work soon and bring a lot of material to the right side to rebalance the nest. otherwise there is the danger that the nest might flip and drop to the left.
i can't estimate how probable this dropping might be. i just remember how hard the eaglets had to work to destroy the nest twice. that was really hard work and took a long time. on the other hand we know that the nest was destroyed in 2014 (or in 2015) and Durbe and Robert had to rebuild it in the winter 2015. what we don't know is why the nest was destroyed then, whether the eaglets tear the nest in 2014, too, or did the wind blow it down.

17:09 the Latvian male H492 flew in an called. he looked around alarmed...
7:11 he flew out. then two eagles flew over the meadow from left to right. it seemed that H492 was chasing another eagle. a male eagle called.

it could be seen that the the surface of the nest was about 30 degrees inclined relative to the horizontal by the way in which H492 stood on the nest.

Good Morning Durbe :D

ame, good morning. Thanks for the detailed documentation. I saw it and thought, oh dear!
It really looks like the nest is collapsing. Voldis had a habit of putting too many branches on the left side. If Voldis isn't here, it would be another difficult season.

As I remember it, the nest tree broke in 2014 and we had the opportunity to observe a nest being built on a new tree. When the camera started, the foundation had already been built.

nest is still there

I am shocked and horrified by what is happening in Israel right now. A friend wrote that it is extremely stressful. He currently works at Hefer Valley Bird Research Station and Israel Wader Research Group. He does research in ornithology. I'm worried about him and our birds.

11:29 Tanya Don wrote in the YT chat: "The nest has fallen 11.27.49"

great news! the nest was far too unreliable to be the basis for a new nest as it was so inclined.

11:25:20 the nest slipped a little to the left. then it possibly made more little, almost invisible slips before falling totally.

the big branch under the nest where the nest was based on was quite wet already when the nest dropped. the branch was very slippery, like soaped or oiled.
one stick seems to be left!

this clips has the whole process from the first noticeable shift to the final collapse.
https://youtu.be/_hbgbXYLOJc

the microphone is invisible under the lower edge of the picture. the camera is looking higher. that's why we have seen a larger slice of the sky. that has been good. often bird fly so high that they are visible in the highest part of the picture.

ame, thank you! :2thumbsup:

I'm glad that the nest is fallen down! It would have been a horror if they had tried to breed in this nest.

Now there is a lot of work for Voldis & Milda. And there's no reason to fight about anything that isn't here. Although the nest tree itself seems very interesting

GT:
Due to the strong wind, the nest of the Durbe sea eagle fell from the fir tree

Due to the strong wind on Wednesday, the Durbe sea eagle's nest fell from the fir tree, according to a tweet by the Latvian Nature
LDF reports that the nest has already fallen three times and each time the birds have successfully restored it and continued nesting. If the nest is not renewed in this tree, then the eagles will build it in another place.

The LDF expresses its determination to follow the developments around Durbe. If a new nest is built, LDF will consider installing a live broadcast system at it.

The fallen nest was built by Milda and Raimis in 2018, when the wind blew away the previous nest in October. Before the snow, the birds had already rebuilt the nest, according to "Dabasdati.lv" forum posts.

As reported, since March 2017, a pair of sea eagles has been staying in this nest, which the watchers of the nest named Milda and Raimis. In 2021, the male sea eagle Raimis disappeared.

Since the end of April 2021, a male, whom the audience gave the name Mr. K, stayed in the nest with Milda. On February 18, 2022, Mr. K was seen on camera for the last time. On the other hand, on February 20, a male appeared in the nest, to whom the bird watchers gave the name Voldis on March 16.

At the beginning of August this year, Voldis disappeared from the audience. Viewers of online cameras can follow how two other males fight for Milda's heart this fall.

The Durbe nest has been watched live since 2015. It is possible to comment on what is happening in the nest in the "Dabasdati.lv" forum in Latvian and in the "Looduskalender.ee" forum in English.

The home of sea eagles in Kurzeme, Southern Kurzeme district is the most popular LDF live broadcast. It is located at the top of an old fir tree, about the height of a nine-story house. The sea eagle Durberta, which hatched in 2015, is even dedicated to a book written by Imantas Bunkša "Brīnumola".

The story of Durbert is special and personal. We started following the progress of the family of eagles already in the winter, when they had just started building their nest, and ended in the fall, when the young bird went on its journey. Durberta's progress was followed not only by viewers from Latvia - the events were viewed more than seven million times from more than 100 different countries. Until now, it has been the most popular of all live nature cameras installed in Latvia. The Durbes eagle's nest was of interest not only to researchers - it revealed the magic of the world of birds to people who were not particularly interested in birds until then. In Internet forums, it was able to bring together groups of like-minded people who not only sympathized, but also asked questions, sought answers and certainly learned a lot. Thanks to Imanta, one of the "forumians", for this book!

Good Morning Durbe :hi:

It looks great. :innocent:
I think this time the situation is different than before. There is neither a clutch, nor chicks here. So there is no reason for Milda to use the nest. If Voldis stops coming, Milda will perhaps move on?

Normally both of them would be doing the fall renovation now.
We may have to wait for a new pair. I'm a little sad. I miss Milda & Voldis

ame wrote: 14:20:27 eagle's calls from very-very-VERY far. Milda's voice? She edited: male voice. Yes it was a male.

Milda doesn't want to rebuild the nest alone. There is no reason for her to come here anymore. Unless she's looking for Voldis.
