January 1st

Here we are again ... :gathering:

We'll see if tonight is that noisy for a lot of living beings
Riga really didn't skimp on fireworks.
The new year was welcomed with great euphoria - or was the old one said goodbye?

Since night vision is turned off this year, it was not possible to see the nest area properly. Sometimes "fireworks" were shot off, which is really quite something... especially loud ...glaring.
When I watch these minutes, I feel the panic of the animals.

(not edited)

There were a few moments where there was rustling and cracking but it could have been anything.

I recorded most of it for my passion for collecting :D (not made public)

Well, no Goshawk has been seen or heard yet.
However, the little neighbors can be heard cheerfully in the new year.
Tits are chirping, wrens, bullfinch... and ravens and crows were already making small talk (11:33)

Good morning Polly and everyone. :hi:

From 12:04 onwards there are sounds that seem like imitations but there can also be a chicken and an adult. It also continues from 1:00 p.m.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone, Polly , Sova :2thumbsup:

I have seen that in Latvia there were not supposed to be fireworks except in some cities but they are heard every year (and close like this year).
t's also getting pretty cold.

Hello Emiliano and @all! :hi:

Today we're actually getting something on our ears.

It started at 09:46...until at least 09:50.
(We can already guess that there is movement in the undergrowth here. Clear crackling noises can be heard - for example 08:21, '24, '30, '31(!), '36, '40(!)

It seems that the duel between the females takes place over a large part of the day.

Both can be heard alternating.

From 12:10 it is primarily the young female that can be heard with individual calls.
12:14:14 There appears to be movement directly below the nest.

Then there is a short break, or the intervals between the calls become larger.
12:15 adult female calls
12:17, 18 young female
From 12:22 - 25 the young female becomes more energetic again and challenges the dominant older female again - and receives extremely sharp warning calls.

12:32 one of the two seems to be very close to the nest...probably right below it. Where H21 once liked to stay. (lower floor)

I've noticed for a few days that the area appears to be under water. Although there is a stream (water-bearing ditch) running through it, the amount of precipitation seems to have been too much.

And... who brought the alder branches? Sweet the cones... I can't remember.
The last branch must have been a long time ago.

13:01 another call for a break and my gut says it's H21.
Their call sounds mild, conciliatory with short sounds at the end.

13:03 This part of the territorial disputes is getting really tiring for me. I'm saturated with sounds and can't tell whether we're hearing an imitation, a "powerless" H21 or a juvenile imitating H21

It totally mixes!

13:03 - 10

Then it becomes clearer again until 1:28 p.m. - the young female calls.

14:08 - 14:55 final spurt for the ladies.
Both gather their energy again and bundle it into shouts.

This stage is also interesting to hear but it is too tricky to make a video here. I would have to cut too much and there is not enough interest for the effort.
There's definitely a lot of cracking to be heard... there was real movement today.

It cannot be taken for granted that the resident female defended successfully. And let's say it's H21... there are definitely very strong young females.

It's always interesting that the males completely abstain. :dunno:

It would be good if Team H slowly found its way to the nest.
It is also very important for us to know whether we are writing about Team H at all.
Keep your fingers crossed that the couple shows up soon.

Have a great time!

January 3rd

:hi: together!

The day so far with no clear signs of a Goshawk.
10:26 Crows can be heard in the distance, audibly approaching
...cracking in the wood, they gurgle
Blue tit alarm calls

10:30 again cracking and crow calls

I think someone is hanging around here.
10:39 quiet crackling and a larger bird comes hidden from the left and settles in a group of branches.

Partly cloudy, flooding showing on my app.
Currently -16°C. (?)
(My other app shows -8°C. Definitely frost.)

It will only get noticeably milder next week. Well, it's winter.

Good afternoon Polly and everyone.

Thanks for the reports. :2thumbsup:

The goshawk chicken is still in the area although little has been heard of it today.

At the moment the temperature in Riga is -13º C and after the snowfall that soaks the ground well, it remains longer if there has been accumulation in the humid area of the nest. Also the clearer corridor that we saw before is seen with more snow. ... It's the winter that Polly says, so far there has been more snow than other years and the temperatures are those of January.

All the best

My email also translates.

Hello Polly and everyone.

I could only listen today from 12:17

13:07 Sighting and sound. She appears coming up from the left area (stream) and perches on a branch while her call is heard. She continues in that position until 13:10:19 when she jumps to an upper branch already off camera. The crows give it away, flights of crows are seen crossing perhaps chasing the goshawk until 13:16:33.
He was also heard briefly in the afternoon.
15:53 (after a crack in a branch), 15:54 and then at 16:37, '38 and '39.

It has snowed again and the temperature is cold, I think that as long as there is snow in the nest it will not perch on it, preferring branches with no snow or very little.
This time he has been closer and has been seen better but no details of recognition can be seen.

Greetings and good night. :offtobed:

Emiliano muchas gracias! :2thumbsup:

Your description of the situation is accurate.
I have the sound for it...

15:53 (after a crack in a branch), 15:54
It starts out like an imitation but then becomes undeniable.

16:37, '38 and '39.
Sorry, I do not have that.

Calm winter weather today... a dream.
The gentle wind blows the snow through sunshine. :innocent:

Image

It's relatively unspectacular so far but not entirely without Goshawk.

from 09:28 The first group of crows moves through the territory, nagging and gurgling.
11:35 +/- Bullfinches can be heard
And always crows.

13:46 a Goshawk calls
Not close to the nest area, probably. I'm having trouble hearing at the moment due to my cold (even more than already). It's particularly quiet here for me today.

13:47, '51, '52, '56 calls and calls

I don't know if we're hearing male, female and/or resident or not.
But it's a Goshawk.
(Sounds like contact to me.)

Look, that was on January 24th a year ago.
First sounds of heat.

I know that many circumstances lead to the start of the real season. It is not correct to compare 1:1. But it's basically close at this point.

It's time to see petticoats. Image

15:31 close call, even movements can be heard
15:32:10 'Gjak'
15:33:22 'Gjak' ... 'Gjak'

... familiar voice but the 'Gjak' sound more like H44

We could use the extension of the main branches. Top branch and side branch...we could probably see petticoats there.
But okay, at some point they will hatch into the nest - and hopefully the stream will run.

from 16:09 Blue tit calls for caution
Another small one agrees...
16:12:20 - 13:30 sounds almost similar to Fitis but it can't be (Fitis migrated)
Chiffchaff? A quiet song?
Which one is it? :help:

I would like to find out about this again.

Have a nice evening! :innocent:
