Goshawk Nests in Riga 2024

Oh, I wish that for you and everyone too.



It's good to sit back after a long time and enjoy life in the nest without having to document anything.
(I've been using the Goshawk every day for about 4 years.
Time to make room. To attract new impressions from other observers and time to use the bookshelf at home.)

This is currently being precisely documented.

Hello Emiliano,
everything is fine. I'm still following the live broadcasts. I will continue to do so.
My plan was to give a summary. Unfortunately, a significant part of my notes have been lost. I will try to salvage and make something out of the rest. Or not, we'll see.

It was (is) a good season for the couple Pērle & Rio.
I'm curious whether the couple will actually choose Nest1 for the next season. They started restoring it a few weeks ago. Especially Rio.

After the season is before the season...
There is a lot of activity in this nest.

After the hawklets flew out of nest 2, things became quieter and Rio delighted with his presence - at nest 1.

June 18

Rio begins nest work in Nest 1.



June 24 & 27th

... with twigs.
Pērle also appears in the nest for a moment.




July 2nd

On this day Rio is preparing the nest very actively.

His actions do not go unnoticed. His hawklets, who are still hanging around the nest, chase him from time to time.

July 16th

Pērle appears for the last time.

She transfers a food carcass from nest 2 to nest 1.

September 3rd 2024


A male Goshawk enters the nest.
He appears curious and very alert.

From then on, the male appears almost daily, sometimes several times a day. He begins to lay and bring branches - the male establishes himself in the territory of Pērle & Rio.

On September 12, two voices can be clearly heard.

The days are similar. The male appears and brings branches.

On the evening of September 23rd, a long communication was heard in the territory. The sharp voice of the female and the gentle sounds of another goshawk.

I was not sure if it was a consensual meeting or a warning/defensive one. But what was certain was that it was a clarifying 'conversation'.

Their sounds were monotonous but clear.

September 24th

The male returns to the nest.
Brings branches and builds.







No sighting of Rio and the female, whose voice can be heard, is camera shy.

It seems that the pair bond is in full swing...courtship is taking place.
The male raises his lower tail feathers into a skirt and lays the branches, dancing to the rhythm of the female's voice.

September 25th

The nest will soon be ready...
Despite the first strong autumn winds, the male continues to work tirelessly.

The pair agree to meet together in the territory very early on.
The male is quickly out of the starting blocks and continues to work on the nest.



The little man is already well dressed - the petticoat fits perfectly.
