There were two brief visitors on the Glaslyn nest today - KA5 / Roli (Brenig 2019), followed by KS6 / Dinas (Dyfi 2018).

You may remember that our boy Gwynant (Blue 3R, 2014 - Parents: Monty & Glesni) has been spotted in recent years (always in early April) in the Asturias region of northern Spain.
You guessed it - he was there again last week. This is for the third year running.
As a 11-year-old, he’s obviously on his way north somewhere to breed, but where?
Muchas gracias a Doriana Pando por enviarnos los detalles sobre Gwynant.

P'nawn da,
After a soaking up the sunshine for the last couple of weeks, things have turned rather chilly and blustery on the nest.
Luckily, experienced mum Telyn knows to sit tight until things improve, keeping her three eggs safe and warm at a toasty 35C despite an ambient temperature of 9C.

If you were watching live this morning you'll have seen an intruder osprey - we now have an ID.
Blue X6 is a 2022 Llyn Brenig bird called Olwen, although we think 'she' could be a 'he'!
Owlen's sibling is called Gelert - he was spotted back in Wales last year - a clutch of two that year, so a 100% return rate.
Parents LJ2 (father) and LM6 (mother). Both Scottish birds.
Either way, s/he is back in Wales as a three-year old looking for a good nest site and mate 💕
Many congrats to the Brenig team

Relief for many of you - we now know Telyn will not lay a 4th egg this year. Yesterday was the day for that.
Despite her mother, Maya, having another quad-egg year over at her Rutland Water nest, Telyn has laid her 8th consecutive hat-trick here at Dyfi.
Hatching eggspected 17th May 🐣🐣🐣

P'nawn da and Pasg Hapus,
Easter weekend is often a time to have visitors popping round. The same can be said of the osprey world, with young, unattached birds returning to the UK, looking for nesting sites.
At established nests, the breeding pair will work together to make it clear there are no vacancies. Whilst these extra birds might not be welcomed by Telyn and Idris, they are a very encouraging sign for the recovery of the population in Wales.

Another day, another ringed Welsh intruder lands...
Blue 499 is a 2022 Glaslyn bird - many congrats to them.
So when do two-year olds (2023) offspring start to come back? In a couple of weeks, early May onwards.

For any newbies, this is classic osprey mantling behaviour.
When you see this happening on the Live Streaming, it means only ONE thing - there is an intruder osprey close by.

For all the photography queries we get - this is what you see with a 600mm lens (35mm, full frame) from the Observatory.
You'll achieve closer magnification with a smaller, cropped sensor camera.
Then closer still with binoculars and telescopes we have set up.
Distance from the Observatory to the nest is just under 200 meters, which is as close as you can get legally in the UK without disturbing the ospreys.
We leave the windows open for you to take pictures, closing them only if we have strong winds and rain.
Then, if you're lucky, an osprey (especially an intruder) may fly directly over our heads in the Observatory - close enough to read a leg ring.
You may see cuckoos too at this time of year.

Telyn and Idris are over half way through incubation now, eggsepcted hatching day for Egg 1 is 17th May.
Telyn did not employ a Delayed Incubation strategy this year, meaning we'll see a slightly longer hatching spread between three eggs 🐣 🐣 🐣

Yesterday we witnessed the coincidence of the decade at the Dyfi nest...
We had a male intruder in the morning - Blue 721 from the Tweed Valley nest in 2022
In the evening we has another male intruder - Blue 720 from the Tweed Valley nest in 2022
These are two brothers from the same nest in the same year!!
That year there were three brothers from that nest, Blue 722 being the third - and he was spotted in Wales last year!
Siblings don't migrate and knowingly spend time together, this is just pure coincidence that these two brothers happen to intrude the same nest on the same day as three-year olds, just hours apart.
Many congrats to all the guys at Tweed Valley Osprey Project
This year they have a ploygamous breeding set-up - that's two females on the nest, both having laid four eggs between them with one male to bring in the fish. Talk about Ostenders!
Eyes up today for a sibling hat-trick, 722...

Telyn going bananas again - this time the intruder is Blue 7C4, a 2022 male from a nest neat Bolton Castle.
We're up to six ringed intruders for the year now, five of them male which is what we'd expect.

Each year, we highlight the changes in Telyn's nevi (eye freckles).
Here’s the 2025 update.
Telyn’s nevi are becoming more pronounced over time, likely due to increased sunlight exposure.
Many birds have nevi, which are harmless but serve as a fantastic identification tool for unringed ospreys—like a unique fingerprint for each bird.
The 8 to 2 o'clock section of the iris remains mostly clear of nevi, as this area is often shaded by the prominent brow ridge called the supraorbital ridge.

Another day, another intruding osprey....
The first two-year-olds are starting to show up now, this is Blue 3H3 (2023) from Manton Bay, Rutland Water.
She is Telyn's half sister (both daughters of Maya with different fathers).
Indredibly, Blue 3H3 this is the FOURTH time she has been spotted already this year – Besthorpe in Nottinghamshire, Poole Harbour, Kielder in Northumberland being previous sightings.
She's our 7th ringed intruder of the year (record is 11 in one season).
The British osprey population spread continues to look up 👀

Telyn (pictured) will soon be raising her 8th consecutive brood of chicks here at her Dyfi nest.
The first two years (2018 & 2019) were with Monty and the last six with Idris.
If all goes well, Telyn will have her 21st, 22nd and 23rd chicks to feed starting next weekend.
Hatching on Saturday, 17th May 🐣🐣🐣

Another intruder, but this one is unringed.
We may not know where this female is from (although probably Scotland), but we do have ways to tell whether she is a frequent visitor.
Worn feathers on the tail can be diagnostic (although only for a few weeks) of a particular bird.
This osprey has visited us several times now.

Telyn is now leaving fish at the side of the nest - this is a classic first sign that hatching is imminent.
We think Saturday for the first one, could it be earlier..? 🐣

Today has been exceptionally special for us.
We've just met Peter Felix at the Dyfi Wildlife Centre, the great nephew of (carpenter) John Felix who built the pitch pine tables and booths in our caffi - in 1895!
John Felix's actual tools still survive and today three of them have been donated to us for our exhibition by the Felix family.
What an unbelievable story. Thank you so much.

We're having a chick-hatching competition over on the Live Chat.
Choice of DOP Beanie hat or Monty the book to the person that gets the date and time nearest to the actual hatching.
Place your best guess for date and time for the first chick hatching (only) on the Live Chat please, not on Facebook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGiKOxCeGVo
Good luck 🐣
