Twenty minutes later, the Hawklets awaken from their stupor.

Meanwhile, Pērle calls out beggingly.

5A2 discovers and examines his ring... :innocent:

19:55 Pērle now jumps into the nest with her children. The area seems safe for her now.

29:29 Pērle pulls out the food and feeds her Hawklets.

At the end, she swallows and regurgitates a bulky piece of the food. The children look on, somewhat offended.

And then it arrived – the rain that had been forecast.
Pērle can no longer completely protect the little ones.

Although we once saw at H21 how many big children can fit under one mother.

Oh, how wonderful!!!
A boy's roommate with a sister. Well, she'll keep her brothers busy. :D

Congratulations and thank you for this pleasant ringing!
Good job Imants,

How do you identify the gender of the hawklets.

Thanks

Hi Polly , Sova , Shuck and all. :hi:

In goshawks there is a good size difference between females and males but in the chambers and in the chicks it is not easy to see until they are bigger. When the male is in front and the female a bit behind, the male looks bigger.
Also the chicks do not all have the same number of days. Ringing is usually done when it is known that the tarsus will not grow much more.
Experienced ornithologists usually know this by the appearance of the tarsi and the claws or nails (I think that in Tartu last year or the year before a female which was the smallest because she was born later was dated as a female when to us by the external appearance she could look like a male).
They see it very closely and even so they can sometimes be doubtful. When they grow up we will see it very clearly.

Greetings to all :2thumbsup:

Hello , Polly , Shuck , Sova and all :2thumbsup:

The ringing of the chicks went quickly yesterday and everything went well.

Both parents screamed and fussed a bit and the babies interpreted their danger signals very well and didn't move almost the whole time. They have good blood inherited from the parents.

Imants Jakovļevs and his staff downstairs took care of everything and did it very well. Congratulations to the team.

Greetings

Emiliano! :2thumbsup:
Yes, it was really very pleasant and didn't waste any unnecessary time.
Professionals, that's all...

Pērle was back at the nest just four minutes after the group left the area below the nest tree.

Best wishes!

Hello Polly and everyone. :hi:

4:59 - 11:00

The chicks are doing well. They're sleeping, stretching their wings, taking short walks, some digging into the ring, and they're eating without getting in each other's way.

They're already fledging, and some differences are starting to show. For me, the advanced feather order is:

5A5, 5A2, 5A4, and 5A3.

This could also be their birth order. The female seems to be the last to hatch (she's whiter).

The prey are brought to the nest sometimes by Perle and other times by H44. Perle frequently perches on nearby branches and rearranges the twigs in the nest.

They're sleeping
... and Mom has to sleep outside.

The hawklets are lying like a giant pancake, taking up the entire nest.

04:14 Pērle leaves the nest and crashes back into it with a large twig.

Pērle, as well as Mona/Zemgale, are currently busy preparing their nests.

05:05 Pērle flies into the field again, and the little darlings almost constantly have their little beaks dangling in the fledgling feathers of their siblings or in their own. They're probably itching a little too, right?

If they don't, they jump and test their jumping power, delighting in all the things they can do with their little wings. :2thumbsup:

Pērle returns with a pine branch.
She leaves the nest again and brings another branch.

After only Boy 5A2 takes a few bites, Pērle carries the rest of the food out of the nest.

5A5 is curiously beginning to learn to grasp. He plays and tests himself with the piece of food left in the nest.

9:40 Pērle returns from the neighboring branches to her children.

The play object belonging to 5A5 is now distributed among the siblings.
Girl 5A3 and Pērle seem to have a special bond. They are all well fed, but Pērle still pays special attention to the girl.

She also likes to grab a pine branch.

12:10 A brush cutter or a trimmer?
Pērle is very attentive – her children don't mind.
