Then she pulled the oldest chick by the down feathers on its head
Kerli, why are you doing that? :puzzled:

Inexplicable! Just like Kaia in her first year when she had offspring. She grabbed every chick by the beak.
An older chick grabbed Kaia by the beak and pulled its head backwards almost to its butt.

I haven't forgotten that. It was scary.

Hi everyone!

I've also seen such wonderfully nurturing behavior in peregrine falcons, at least in the couple I've been observing regularly for a few years. With these two, the father is the more patient one and often explicitly feeds the youngest. Here, too, the youngest learns interesting behaviors to assert itself against the stronger ones when it comes to food: diving! Diving under the others and suddenly finding itself in the front row. It's wonderful to observe how and what skills the dwarfs learn. And I believe that by learning to assert themselves in early childhood, they will probably be able to assert themselves well throughout their growing lives.

PS sorry, itis the response to some earliet Postings.

Yes, the only explanation I can think of is that first-time motherhood is tough on Kerli. No doubt she wants to do her best, but presumably she doesn't find much food and she may be hungry herself. So she is stressed. And quickly loses patience with the chicks. Their twittering probably gets on her nerves if she doesn't have much food in her crop.

Yes, Kaia did similar things. It was indeed scary.

Good evening
You can understand my statement or not... I think the BS are extremely sensitive , in every respect. What's more, the observers are becoming just as sensitive as these.

Even the *bathroom trip* is a drama... healthy PS, not healthy PS...
My God, they'll survive, just like all the other chicks, or they won't...
All the comments keep me constantly on edge... there's always a catastrophe looming...
takes it a little more calmly...

Swenja, thank you for your perseverance and time.

About the feedings:
07:36 Kergu
10:54 Kerli
14:58 Kergu
17:02 Kergu
19:48 Kerli

The intervals between feedings become longer. The chicks' crop can now grab a larger amount of food.

Why is Kerli always moving her left leg like that every few seconds? Is she still nervous, is it a kind of tic?

Hello @Hulbi Lorm :hi:

Kerli seems to be very tense. I don't know the reason.

Hello Hulbi!
I also noticed those movements. I don't know what the cause might be. However, raised feathers are often a sign of nervousness. Kerli does not seem at ease.

Edit: We also don't know if Kerli experienced anything unpleasant or stressful outside the nest today. :puzzled:

Here Kerli is preening.
