Kalvi, September 03

2023-09-02, 16:58 UTC - 2023-09-03, 16:55 UTC

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit? ... sp=sharing

Battery: 100 %
Distance: 343!! km

Kalvi is in southern Poland. Except for a break at last night, Kalvi has spent the day flying.
The last data points probably show Kalvi foraging or looking for a resting place.

I was so moved by the long first days of Kaia and Karl II as they fly to the Sudan. I had tears at the news of their amazing, strong flights, acknowledging the mysterious calling that takes them over lakes and seas and cities and farms so far away. Bless your journeys, Kaia, Kalvi, Karl II and our sweet Kiire and Kerri.
Thank you to those who track and post the flight information daily. And to those whose nest information and photos every day brought us to this point.

KALVI 04.09.2023
From 03.09. 16:55 until 04.09. 16:48 UTC
Battery: 100 %
Distance: 592 km

(can this be possible?)

https://www.google.de/maps/d/edit?mid=1 ... sp=sharing

Kalvi started in Poland, flew over Slovakia and Hungary and is now in Serbia, still in flight with a speed of 68 km/h. 😶. In some areas he had a speed of over 100 km/h, it must be a wonderful wind.

Hey Sweetie, where are you going too? I hope you don't want to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

Hm. That looks weird. Is this a common migration route? And almost 600 km in one day is crazy. :puzzled:

Hello @Francesca_V :hi:
Kalvi had a tailwind today and warm air rising from the ground. It may well be that the conditions were so optimal.
At least that's what the weather map says for today.

Then I calm down. Thank you Swenja!

PS the wind direction explains his flight direction. it looks like he just has let the wind carry him.

Kalvi's direction is much farther west of the other black stork tracks - I wonder if, as someone else wrote, he is letting the winds carry him southwest. If he goes down the west side of the Black Sea it seems he will have a longer route than the others. And Kaia stopped for the day or has another explanation for a non-flight day. I hope she is well. Kalvi has now gone a little farther than Kaia; and Karl II is coming up quickly behind them. Since Estonia is about 9 hours ahead of Washington State, U.S. where I live, he will be in early morning when I am approaching night. It would be lovely to have a drone sighting of them day to day! - wishing.
