10:26 a squirrel came to check if there are new cones for him on the nest. this was still very red.
he roamed around the whole nest and smelled every stick and straw. i tried to see if he made his own markings on the nest (pee like a dog) but i didn't notice that.
this combined picture illustrates rather well what the camera's optics does to the size of an object as the distance to the camera increases. the squirrel looks twice as big in the front compared what he looks like in the back, not to mention what he looks like on the left branch or on the lower right corner where he came up.

9:37 Milda flew away over the meadow.
Raimis followed her a few seconds later. he took direction to the Fish Market. Milda disappeared behind the poop branch in the centre.

Milda turned left, Raimis turned right. They ended up flying to one point. :D

Squirrel came in some unusual today. She has black brushes on her ears and a tail with black hairs.

i'm sure that everybody is welcome to participate!
you will be able to make your contribution in DDF if/when you have joined the DDF forum! as far as i understood what Janis wrote he wished that all observations would be gathered in one place, in DDF.
i believe that quite many LKF members are members of DDF, like i am. i'm sure that they'll be happy to admit more members from this side. everyone's contribution is welcome in this project.

Hello everybody!

Perhaps you are up to date - the Latvian Ornithological Society will start collecting data for the Winter Bird Atlas in December. I know that not only eagle activities, but also other bird species (and not only) are registered in the forum. This data is particularly important because, for a number of species, only camera observations may be recorded in this field. So I have a request - could observations of other species be saved in a separate place so that we don't have to read them out later from the wide range of forum posts? Maybe we can create a new forum topic in the same section of sea eagles? In addition to visual observations, sound recordings (e.g. for owls) are helpful for species registration.

Work on the third Latvian breeding bird atlas begins in spring, so observations of other species are also relevant to us during the breeding season - we can continue to record them under the same topic "other species". The same should be done with other cameras (although in winter it will only be a step without the eagle).

Good luck!

BTW, if I translate Latvian into German, the result is better than Latvian into English

good morning and Merry Christmas! Image

i hear dripping water. some droplets are hanging from branches but i don't see rain. the water sounds probably come from the stream under the tree. i think i heard rain during the night.

i made a rather long video of the tawny owls calling this morning. it sounded at times like there were two males who called almost at the same time, one near and one far. also a female voice was heard both near and far, but it's possible that one female flew from one place to the other. sometimes the owls were very near.

good heavens, someone had a party on the nest during last night!
Image

the nest looked strange when i first saw it but i saw the difference when i started to go through the recordings since yesterday evening.
Image

i found the guest.
6:10 - 6:17 there was someone, most likely a mammal on the nest. unfortunately it was pitch black. the animal didn't say anything either so we can only guess who it was. maybe a pine marten?

10:02

11:00 church bells again.

can you remember at what time the rumbling was?

this is the lightning map from this morning 7 - 9 UTC, which means 9 - 11 local time.
there was a thunder storm in SW England and in the Mediterranean but nowhere near us.
Liz must have heard some other noise. :puzzled:

A hashish cigarette smoker?
I thought it might have been a marten or a raccoon? In any case, someone who has a lot of strength.
This hiss was too short to assign to an animal. a little light would have been helpful.

hash Liz! :rotf:

i don't think that raccoon climb trees..? :puzzled:
i was thinking of a marten, too. the animal was banging the sticks so loud that it could not be anyone small. squirrels make less noise.

ame, raccoons climb very well. You sleep, among other things tree caves.
and give birth to their puppies in these caves.
I have raccoons on my balcony since the summer. This is a little terrifying. I'm not afraid of them, but they can come to my apartment. In summer I sleep with the balcony doors open.

BTW: they make sounds similar to this animal tonight. But they can also be very loud. I was incredibly scared when one of them was screaming. It practical was screaming in my ear. (in the early morning)
