There is information in Saaristomeri front page that the thunder storm broke the cam the 23th May. The cam is not possible to prepair before the Osprey chicks are banded.. about 30th Jun - or in the beginning on July. Prepairing work (to climb almost to the nest) before that would be a risk to too much disturbance...

The first chick is waited to be hatched about the first days of Jun.

It's sad.. but I believe the project people will give information every now and then. The nest was not harmed by the storm. 'Ordinary people' and amateur ornitologists an even profs are asked to not go near the nest, best is to stay off the area of Seili, how curious one ever is..

BTW I found a picture if three Ospreys on the nest place.. In the Finnish page Saaristomeri archive

The DNA (phone)operator is repairing something there... Just have to wait and see when they get it going again.

NOW I can see THREE ospreys clearly there! What's the date? Is it 2008 or 2009?

Suvi It is 2009! It's difficult to see in the picture, but the original 'name' of the picture is "140409_kolme_saaksea"

The one to the right under the huge wing looks funny: 'OMG, be carefull..'! of course it can be the male too!!..

An osprey is pandion haliaetus., but not a sea eagle. It is a sea hawk.
A White tailed Eagle is also Haliaeetus.
A Bald eagle is another Haliaeetus.

A golden eagle is Aquila.
Greater and lesser spotted eagles are Aquila.

it says in my book that the osprey is the only representative of it's genus and family. it's family name 'Pandion' is given from Greek mythology: the gods turned Pandion, the king of Athens into a fish (and the rest of his family to various birds; my book doesn't tell why, as a revenge or punishment for something?). Linné described the osprey in the 18th century and called it the 'fish falcon', 'Falco haliaeetus'. in the osprey's present name 'haliaetus' means a 'fish-eater'.
Wikipedia gives the following etymolofy for WTE: 'Haliaeetus', New Latin for "sea-eagle". 'albicilla', "white-tailed", from Latin albi- "white" + cilla, "tail". so the WTE is the white-tailed fish-eater, i guess . i don't know why the other 'haliaetus' is written with one 'e' and the other with two, i'm not a latinist . both must mean fish-eater, so all these guys eat fish.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), on the other hand, is not bald at all, but it is white-headed = 'leucocephalus'. the Latin word 'cephalus' means head and 'leuco' means white (these are biological terms, but maybe not classic Latin; EDIT: i learned later that 'leuco' is Greek for 'white'!, while 'albus/alba/album' is Latin for 'white'). - i found an explanation for this baldness in the Finnish Wikipedia: 'bald' is short for 'piebald' meaning a colouring with white spot on black background (like the pied flycatcher), or it could also be 'descending' from the old English word 'balde' meaning white.

'Aquila' and 'Haliaeetus' are genera like 'Pandion' (the plural for 'genus' is 'genera'; gosh this really makes me study things! i had to check the dictionary for this... ..and i've been composing this post for one and half hours, i think, and i'm starving ) and 'Aquila' and 'Haliaeetus' belong to the family 'Accipitridae', while the genus 'Pandion' belongs to its own family 'Pandionidae'. these three families belong to the order 'Accipitriformes', i.e. the diurnal birds of prey. so, the osprey really is one of its kind.
- i hope that the above doesn't confuse things.

DNA (phone)operator has still the same problems with this connection (unbelievable case)
There is also another problem. The camera is now little tilted because of heavy storm - the nest and ospreys seems to be ok.

If you go to Kaleva's page - don't click the image - it will refresh automatically

Good morning Normal life going on Seili! Thunderstorm did not harm the nest. There is an article about the situation in Seili nest in Turun sanomat today. Eggs are not supposed to have harmed by the thunderstorm

A new camera is waiting to be there instead of the broken cam. The chicks will be banded about the first days of Jun, and the new live cam is to be put on at same time.
I'm too slow to translate, bad English

That is good news, they will put new camera while ringing the chicks. Its pity there is no view now (the chicks should hatch soon ), but more important is that they are ok
I havent watch the cam much, but I like the pictures here- I adore this Saaristomeren (Archipelago Sea) cam view
