Madis was here. Someone on camara but never showed up then flew away. Later, Madis flew away, too.

I've gone through the Pontu archive of this morning and found out this:


4:21 - first registred picture of the day shows an empty nest

6:23 - two birds on the nest, who seem to be mantling. Madis is most likely one of them (metal ring on right leg). The other bird has no visible 'backpack' (satellite tracker) like Piret has:




6:24 - Madis is still mantling. The other bird (looks like a female) seems more relaxed. No visible rings on her:

6:28 'till 6:34 - Madis still alone on the nest, but relaxed now. Standing in the nestbowl.

6:35 - empty nest

7:06 - unringed female on the nest:

7:07 'till 7:17 - the unringed female moves some sticks and stands on 1 leg on the nest. She seems to feel comfortable and relaxed:






7:18 - nest is empty

7:19 / 7:20 - unringed female on the nest again:




7:21 - Madis on the nest too, performing what looks like submissive mantling (done in courtship by the male to show the female that he is no threat):




7:22 / 7:23 - Madis and unringed female both on the nest. Madis still a bit submissive

7:24 - unringed female flew off, Madis alone on the nest

7:33 - Madis off, empty nest

7:36 'till 7:45 - unringed female stands on the edge of the nest. On 2 Pontu snapshots it looks like she's yelling for fish. She's preening too on 1 occasion.

7:46 - nest is empty again

8:20 - cam went offline again, and so did the Pontu archive

After that no sightings till the camera and also the Pontu archive went offline at 8:25

August 6th

6:12 till 6:14 - a jay visited the nest:




Looking at the arrangement of the sticks and branches on the nest, it seems that someone has been cleaning up and re-arranging them, compared to how the nest looked 10 days ago, when Madis and this unringed female were seen.

I have been checking the Pontu archive every morning, but it only records between about 4:30 and 8:30, and then again in the late afternoon/early evening. So it could very well be that Madis and/or this unringed female, or maybe even Piret, have been visiting the nest lately in the hours that Pontu didn't record.

I'm dieing to get to know more about the current situation of my favourite pair of ospreys; Madis & Piret.

Madis is always in the submissive posture when he and this female are on the nest. That tells me they are not a pair at this time. I am still hoping Piret is ok and is on another nest, nearby. Perhaps this female is checking out the nest on a regular basis in hopes of making it a home next year for herself, a mate and chicks.

A quite short camera season ends, with some interesting observations though.

At least we know that Piret and Madis were nesting, but with no happy-end:

Hopefully both are safe and sound in their wintering places and enjoying their lifes there.
