Petolintulive 21/01

The ill-tempered 4w Kolme seems to tolerate a new old unmarked eagle with red head, probably a male and called "Red". Not the same as 31/12.
A romance on the way?

January 24th

Luontolive shared a video today. All visitors one day ... with feathers - without feathers, two legs - 4 legs ... (in the background of the area).

@sigge :hi:
We see both GE again.

What do you think? Male and female? I find the size difference noticeable although it doesn't mean anything. And you are definitely the expert.

What do you think of their relationship to each other?
A couple?
There is no more subservience. Both seem very agreeable.

Oh how I wish Petolintulive had a better microphone, it's up all night and would be a perfect place to hear owls.
(Yeah I tried all night :whistling: )

Red was there in the afternoon but not his fiancé.

Yes, I saw him too. Accompanied by magpies but without the female.

In general, there was great light there today ... from morning to evening. I could have taken a thousand photos.

Wow! a second winter Golden Eagle ringed 2020 from Estonia!!!

Bad ring shots:

This is the second only Golden Eagle from Estonia ever recorded in Sweden

Maybe Kotkaklubi can dechiffer some of the characters on the rings, last one on left black ring is K anyway.
Kelly?
In 2020 there were 20 fledged nestlings in Estonia and all got colour rings.
Hope the local staff was there in the hide and could take good pictures, me only saw the last bit when he already had a full crop (yeah looks like a male)

Edit: got a response from the locals and they had no people on place but say the left ring is --5K

sweet picture ... :innocent:

It must have been a magnificent trout. In fact, otters are not 'out of the woods' in Germany either. Only in the east are stocks slowly increasing. Still too little. And frightening how quiet and unnoticed - unnoticed some animals will soon no longer be seen.

Male brought a branch yesterday!

January 27th

There is a new branch in the nest, possibly dropped outside of streaming time.
(More like falling in the wind for me,not laying. :puzzled: )

I followed the TS of Stelian Bodnari and JS in chat...
Eagle? Female?

(cut)

Not only the voice can be heard (sounds strange to me at times), also permanent work (breaking of branches?) - but where? And you can hear Jay too.

@Polly, yeah, some lazy photographer finally sent in pictures and it's 415K.

(don't like photographers, always disturbing)

The eagle pair again today at Petolintulive and now Red with a new stylish hair cut

Goshawk came in right after that.

Hmm, I personally prefer the style a la Struwwelpeter, but yes...spring makes a lot of things new.

Unfortunately, the GE camera in Romania buffers.
Today the transmission was not stable for an hour. I think the total stream was 37 minutes. If the couple does not decide on another nest (GE likes to have several nests), then the stream is perfectly maintained. That's how it was last season.
And I think there is a test phase going on here to see if the pair will actually breed.

The camera runs like clockwork. Even now in the evening. Excellent!

No sighting for today but both GE, male and female were heard not far from the nest today.

I hope you'll forgive the poetic but possibly not uninteresting outburst...
Der Adler und die Elster (französisch L'Aigle et la Pie) ist die elfte Fabel aus dem zwölften Buch der ersten Fabelsammlung von Jean de La Fontaine, die 1668 erstmals veröffentlicht wurde.[1]
GT:
The Eagle and the Magpie (French L'Aigle et la Pie) is the eleventh fable from the twelfth book of the first collection of fables by Jean de La Fontaine, which was first published in 1668.[1]
The eagle and the magpie, who are completely different in spirit, intellect, language, and plumage, once met by chance. The magpie was inferior to him and afraid of him, but the fed eagle reassured her and even suggested that they should fly together, because he was bored and wanted to have fun. He graciously allowed her to entertain him. Making a virtue out of necessity, the magpie began to chatter like mad, and soon the eagle found her obnoxious. He then sent her home, and the magpie had achieved her goal.[2]

@sigge, I could really use your knowledge.
Is it the female who brings the birch branch to the feeding station and gives it to the male ('Red')? It's a female, isn't it?

Luontolive posted a video.

If I understand correctly, there is a nest 3km away (not successful = not used?). Another in 10km.

Nice!, missed that :D
Yeah the one with nesting material is the ringed 4w and I think it's a female since it got rather thick legs.

Today the ad male Goshawk was there 15:35.
At 15:11 a magpie took a shrew eating on the feeder:
Image

They taste bad and are surely not some juicy little mouse snack, wonder if he ate it

Petolintulive Feb 04 with wind and snow

15:12 4w and Red arrives together and eating for 5 min:
Image

Now it doesn't look like 4w have thicker legs, Red is the female? :whistling:
BTW: Red is often brushing up the head feathers, maybe not in best condition?

I read that golden eagles spend hours preening during courtship. The couple spends a lot of time together grooming feathers - and associated with this is the setting up of feathers, including head feathers.

Since that is not the case here at the feeding station, I explain it differently. Perhaps the male "Red" is very sensitive to "his" territory. He's always observing his surroundings. Is it possible that he is extremely nervous at this time? We also observe the erection of the head feathers in other birds when they are excited - seeing the partner (happily) or in case of danger ...

In any case, Red looks dumb good in it. 8-)

Nja, I think Red is freezing, often brushing up feathers when he is relaxed.
