Good morning! Although it doesn't look like it from this angle, those branch perches are actually in a separate tree from the nest, so that is a proper fledge!

We have lift off! At 10:08am on Sunday morning the first chick of the four, 5R0 took flight and fledged, settling on a nearby tree. Then, just over an hour later, 5R2 did the same, making it as far as the nest camera perch!
This is a huge moment and we'll expect the other two chicks to begin to fledge later this week. They'll continue using the nest for the coming weeks, returning to be fed by their parents before they begin their first migration in August/September to West Africa.

Well, well, well…..look who’s just turned up in the harbour! Almost exactly 3 months after he was first seen back in the UK, here in Poole, our male 374 has just decided to show up again!

An interesting update! Just after 374 arrived back yesterday, a mystery blue ringed female joined him on a nest platform. Annoyingly we weren’t able to ID who this was as the photo wasn’t clear enough and neither have been seen since, because 022 came in and saw them off. We’re really hoping they’ll re-appear today 🤞🤞🤞

Thank you to everyone who voted to name this year’s osprey chicks here at Llyn Brenig in North Wales!
Emrys was a clear winner in the boy’s category! But it was a bit closer in the female name poll with Bethan narrowly edging out Einir.
So, say a big hello to Emrys (8B8) and Bethan (8B9)!

Noswaith dda, good evening.
A lovely piece of footage showing some nice behaviour from 8B8. He was practising holding something in his talon and tearing it up, looks like its a piece of wood he is practicing on. Practicing for holding and tearing fish to eat.

We’ve had a mystery Osprey causing trouble at the nest site over the last 24 hours, which until now has been unidentified. Thanks to @MyaBambrick1, our Osprey Engagement Officer, who got these great photos this AM, we’re now able to see its Rutland female 1H1. Is this who 374 was with the other day? For the first time since late March we have an empty nest!! At 17:17 our final chick 5H6 fledged up to the cam perch. Although the chicks will continue to visit the nest for food the season is definitely coming to a close & we’ll see less & less of this years cohort. What a season! Who would have thought when our pair arrived back on March 25th (022) and 26th (CJ7) we’d be in for such an incredible ride this summer. Thanks all so much for following the family this year. You’ve all been a part of the story as much as the Ospreys have. 👍👍👍 Careys Secret Garden Tim Mackrill Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation

Another milestone!!!! Bethan and Emrys holding the fish and eating it. After 372 had fed the chicks she allows 8B8 Enrys to take the fish from her but 8B9 Bethan grabs the fish and tries to hold it and eat it. 8B8 takes bits of fish while his sister holds it. Quite a long video but it's great to see them practicing holding the fish and feeding themselves.

5H6, this year's youngest Osprey chick, has officially fledged!
While he managed to get up to the camera pole yesterday, today he finally took his first proper flight, four days after 5R1 fledged, and just over a week after the oldest two chicks fledged.
5H6's fledge was captured on the aerial view camera, which had been focused on the landscape camera pole ready for when he finally decided to take the leap. What a moment - and now we can celebrate four chicks fledging from the Carey Osprey nest!

WTS
Update - Tuesday 6:30pm

We heard this afternoon that one of the Arkaig ospreys died in Spain this morning.
Full details in this post.
Two Arkaig osprey chicks were flown to Spain on July 10 as part of a translocation organised by the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation.
This news release outlines what led to the decision to remove the chicks from the nest.

I am afraid we have some bad news from Spain.

One of the Arkaig chicks - 1JR - died this morning.

It seems that it began to suffer seizures over the last few days. The project team became very concerned and it was removed from the hacking pens to the care of a specialist vet. This morning it had a series of seizures before dying.

The vet has said the cause of death was heart failure. It is not known whether this heart failure was directly linked to the condition behind the fits - or if it was the stress from the fits which caused it.

Tests will be carried out but it does at the moment look likely that this individual bird may have had a congenital condition of some kind that would have made its survival unlikely no matter what. Before the seizures it was, like the other 11 Scottish birds doing really well, benefiting from a great diet and looking to be in good shape. It was putting on weight, wingercizing and on course to fledge imminently.

It had of course been in a very poor condition when removed from the Arkaig nest. It would not have survived over the weekend before removal had it not been fed. In the first few days after removal the RDWF team remained concerned about it because it had been so weak. But with plentiful food and less harsh conditions it recovered well and had appeared to be flourishing with all the others since arriving in Spain.

All the birds have been at ease since settling into the pens so it does not appear there is anything the translocation team have done that has contributed.

This is very sad news and very unexpected. We will share any further info when we get it.

Meantime 1JW and the other ten Scottish birds are thriving and the pens are likely to be opened for them to fly potentially later this week.

We have just received word that 1JW fledged this afternoon in Spain, just before 3pm.

Now he is flying he can ramp up his campaign for world domination! 😄

Photos have been posted on twitter. https://x.com/WTScotsocial/status/1816566018589770050

The pics show him at one of the feeding platforms the project has placed around the hacking pens that have been home to the Scottish ex-pats for the last couple of weeks.

As you can see there is a nest structure on the platform. I am told the young ospreys will likely stick around these and will roost either on these platforms, in nearby trees or sometimes on the roof of the hacking pens.

Food will continue to be provided in this area for the rest of their time before migration. For now they can start building up their mind maps of the surrounding marshes - which will essentially ‘heft’ them to this location in the years ahead.

It’s so great to see him out and about, isn’t it? 😀

I think all 11 birds will have taken to the skies today. Imagine that!
