The eldest chick is now 10 days old and the first soft down is starting to disappear before our eyes, as Cyw Bach 1 morphs into the “reptilian” phase before the first feathers pin in.

Fantastic news!
Blue 497 (2022) intruded at the Dyfi Osprey nest in mid-Wales on Sunday 16 June.
We were absolutely thrilled to receive the news from Dyfi Osprey Project and would like to thank them for sending us the original images from their cameras and allowing us to share them.
It is especially poignant that two of Mrs G’s final brood have not only successfully returned to the UK as adults, but they have also both returned to Wales. Blue 498 landed on the Glaslyn nest back in May. By an incredible coincidence the only other time two chicks from the same Glaslyn brood have been recorded as having returned, was from the final brood produced by our original male 11(98), and Mrs G back in 2014. Blue 9C and Blue 8C have been recorded on numerous occasions as adults, although sadly 8C died in Senegal last November.

Osprey Update! 🦅
It's time for your dose of Osprey drama at Loch Garten! So, what's been happening this week?
🦅 Asha & KL5: Our dynamic duo is still together, but there's been no shortage of excitement! We've seen more intruders this past week, keeping Asha and KL5 on their toes.
🧐 Intruder Alert: Earlier this week, we spotted Osprey 441, a young female who hatched in Kielder in 2022 and is the granddaughter of the famous Mrs. G from Glaslyn in Wales! 441 spent some time arranging the nest and looked quite comfortable until Asha chased her off. Young females like 441 often roam when returning to the UK, and she was later seen in Usk Valley in Wales.
🦅 Unringed Intruder: We've had another visitor, an unringed female Osprey, spending lots of time on the nest when KL5 and Asha aren't around. She even sat comfortably with KL5 for a while before he realized she wasn’t Asha!
It'll be interesting to see if this new female sticks around and how loyal KL5 remains to Asha. Stay tuned for more updates as the Osprey saga continues!

A big thank you to Brenig Osprey Project for letting us know that Blue 498 (2022) intruded at the Brenig Osprey nest yesterday, (Wednesday 26 June). It is great to know that he is still exploring Wales.
We last saw Blue 498 on May 2 when he landed on the Glaslyn nest. We wonder where he has been in between the resightings?
Will he turn up at the Glaslyn nest again? It would make it extra special if Blue 497 (2022) was also to put in an appearance after the recent visit to the Dyfi nest.

The three chicks are rapidly morphing into small Ospreys.
The eldest chick appears to be the most dominant of the brood and although it can be difficult to watch at times, all three chicks are receiving food and are thriving. Having a more dominant older sibling and having to wait patiently for the older chicks to be fed first did no harm to Black 80 (2006) and White YA (2007). These two Glaslyn born males have successfully raised 69 chicks to the fledging stage between them.
We wonder what sex the eldest chick will turn out to be? Hopefully we should get to find out very soon, as we plan to ring the Glaslyn chicks next week. The live stream will be turned off during the ringing process, but we will make a highlights video as usual.

Elen enjoys taking a daily bath to keep her feathers fresh after spending so many hours on the nest with the chicks. No wonder she is enjoying being able to spend time sitting on her perch once again!

All three chicks have made their first attempts at self-feeding this week, with differing success rates. We will soon be seeing tug of wars over who wins the fish!

This week all three chicks have been actively strengthening their wings ready for the first take off. The average age for osprey chicks to fledge is 53 days, but they can fledge from 49 days onwards. We might see the eldest chick take to the air during the middle part of next week.

The fledging window has already opened for sisters 6M8 and 6M7, but it will be Sunday before 6M9 reaches 49 days old.
Ospreys can fledge from 49 days old, but the average is 53 days. This can also vary slightly between males and females. Males mature slightly faster than females, as they are smaller and have less growing to do, so it likely that their lower weight assists an earlier first take off.
Currently Glaslyn male chicks have on average fledged at 52.1 days and Glaslyn females at 54 days. We could potentially see this year’s chicks fledging very close together or perhaps even on the same day.

The Glaslyn chicks are quickly growing up since they fledged earier this week, and all three spent the night on the perch with Elen on Thursday night.
They fledged to the averages we would expect for their sexes. 6M8 fledged at 54 days old and 6M7 at 55 days old. The average age for our female chicks to fledge is 54 days. 6M9 fledged at 52 days old, which is the average age for Glaslyn male chicks to take their first flight.
