It is bizarre that Kati didn't cover one egg, several times.
Could it be a strategy to reduce the brood size? :puzzled:
.............
Anne :hi: Good Morning

thanks for the great pictures :2thumbsup:

That was my first thought too, because she has raised only 3 chicks the last 3 years.
That would be better than a chick...

I did not watch it yesterday ... just this morning. And I think we will not know.

The question is, since when are the eggs incubated. That would be the day they breed day and night
It was cold in the night- 1°But no frost. At least that's what Ventusky says .. how safe is it? I saw frost on Kati's wings. If there was frost, at least one egg is lost.
It may be that everything is good. But there will be a significant delay before the chicks hatch from these eggs.

I have now sent a mail to Maris S.. Maybe he knows an answer. Or he has a guess. At least he knows the behavior better than me and we all here. Except of course Urmas

After watching the video, I think it was not intentional

And I was wondering if it happens to others as well. We do not see everything. For example, we do not see is on the right side of Kati when she lies in the nest, with her face to the left.
What a sentence! :slap: I hope it is understandable what I mean. I am too tired to search for other words.

and the video from the early morning. After she got up and stretched, she also covered this egg.

Yes, hardly she did it deliberately, because it is impossible to differ one egg from others. If Kati decided to get rid of egg, she could simply peck on it.

I don't know, Liz. :puzzled:
It would surprise me that an experienced female would handle her precious eggs so carelessly.

Coincidentally, this evening Karl II gave a "demonstration" of how he makes sure that he has all the eggs under his belly.

1. He neatly puts the eggs together. (19:59:43)
Image

2. He positions himself above the clutch. (20:00:00)
Image

3. He carefully ensures that he places a foot on each side of the clutch. (20:00:03)
Image

4. He carefully lowers his body. (20:00:06)
Image

5. He comes up a little to shuffle the eggs in a good position between his legs, under his belly. (20:00:07)
Image

6. He has now neatly covered all 4 eggs. (20:00:10)
Image

I'm quite sure Kati can do this the same way.
Then why didn't she do it?
I think it depends on how long the egg has remained uncovered. If it has been lying in the cold for hours, it may be lost.
Then perhaps the intention was to reduce the brood size.

If the egg has been "cooled" for shorter times, it may also have been the intention to delay its hatching/development.
That would only make sense if it concerns the first laid egg. (Or maybe the two first laid eggs.) Does Kati know which egg(s) she didn't cover?
A few years ago I might have laughed with this idea, but the knowledge of birds keeps surprising me ...

Thanks, Liz.
It will be interesting to read the opinion of this BS expert.

This is the (edited Google Translate) text of what is said on Looduskalender:

"Already in the evening was noticed that the female, Kati, left one egg uncovered, and in the morning the same happened again...
The question is: why?
This is certainly not negligence, but the reason is unclear. Does the stork feel that it will be difficult to raise four offspring?"

Good Morning all :hi:

Anne, thank you for the evening pictures and your opinion about Kati. :2thumbsup: I'm curious what Maris M. means. Maybe he needs a video to see the behavior.

Early Morning- Kati is still on the curved branch. But it may be that they changed places a few times in the night.
5:33 Karl II is clacking with the beak, Kati turns on the branch. Karl II stands up and the greet each other.. only with white fanned tail.
Image

5:34 Kati flew to the right. Karl II is poking in the nest and settles on eggs for continue incubating.

Good morning
From the early morning video about the uncovered egg it can be seen that the egg was so close to Kati's face and as she sees sideways - it is out of question that she did not see it.

10:23 he stands up and is preening his belly .. then his is rolling the eggs and aerating the nest bowl.

10:35 Karl II is sleeping

and I will be away for a few hours
