that should encourage the others take on their wings. 8-)

there have been some questions about the first flight, how will it happen, and about the efficiency of the wing exercises without the safe platform for them, the nest. i'm sorry that i haven't been able to write anything about this.

i think that the high jumps which we saw Durberta making last year on her nest are probably out of the question here. the eaglets will probably hold tightly on to the branch and that would be only wise. they will, however, feel how their wings start to lift their bodies up also in this kind of exercise. i think that they will get the same feeling as they would get from jumping high and getting in the air for a moment.

i have also noticed that windy weather works as a catalyst for wing exercises: they get speed relative to air and that is necessary for flying. the first flight will probably happen at windy weather rather than with no wind.

it is also probable that they will fly somewhere farther from the nest, out of our sight, rather than land somewhere where we could see them. the forest is rather dense and sighting is very limited. after the flight (or glide) they will land more or less gracefully on some branch (if they are lucky, rather than on ground) on a lower level that the starting point, the ex-nest was. there they will probably stay for some time and think for a while about what they experienced. 8-)

if the nest were still here they would return to the nest later. now that the nest is gone they have practically nowhere special where to return to, so it is rather likely that they will not return in front of the camera. parents will find them and feed them in the forest.

on the whole, i think they will do the same thing as Rahu has done: he has somehow made his way closer to the nest and he is probably in some tree at the moment.

btw: i have heard Rahu calling in the forest nearby while i wrote the above. one of the eaglets has called even more. probably it is Nord who is still hungry. he has a high tenor voice. Taibu has a lower alto (or perhaps she is still a mezzo-soprano  ). a day or two back i heard their voices one after the other and there was a clear difference in the tones of their voices.
edit: i found the video. i didn't have time to post it yesterday. i think that it was Taibu who on the parents' branch saying first kvak-kvak-kvak in a low voice. then Nord on the lower left branch said kvik-kvik-kvik in a high voice. :D

Rahu is now calling in the forest kvik-kvik-kvik.

17:17 A parent (Uku ? :vangry: that fog) arrived with a prey.
17:18 It flew away with the prey.
17:20 Same? parent flew on a low level from left to right and went to Rahu's place. Rahu sounds happy.

Parent flied away on the left, then on the right. Maybe he is urging the eaglets to fly.

So, anyone else can confirm that it was 100% Rahu flying this morning? Ame?

BTW. Why is this image so foggy now? :banghead:

17:38 One of the parents again flew on a low level from left to right and went to Rahu's place. Nord and Taibu both made wing exercises after that. Taibu went (or fell) to the basement and was there about two minutes. Then she climbed up to the parents' branch (17:47 about)

Thanks Ame for that long explanation!

I found some extra general information about what happens in the weeks after young eagles' first flight:

Once the young eagles have fledged they remain somewhere around the nest for six to ten weeks, sometimes more, taking short flights while their primary feathers grow and strengthen. Their parents still provide all of their food.
The young birds, with the exception of their color, resemble their parents, but are nothing like them in behavior. Although a young eagle has the instincts to hunt, it lacks the skills. They have to learn how to hunt. The parents cannot tell juveniles how to do, they have to learn by watching the parents and practicing.
After this learning process, they're on their own in early autumn. The first winter is the most difficult part of an eagle's life.
Higher predators like BE and WTE are born with instincts that urge them to fly, to bite or to pounce, but precisely how to do these things is another matter. Through months of trial and error, eagles acquire basic skills such as lighting on perches or stooping on prey through practice. Eagles practice with almost fully developed bodies, and so sharpen their skills quickly.

Sources: I found this information (I made a compilation) here:
http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle4.html
Because that article is specifically about BE,
I compared this data with information I found about WTE, and then adjusted some minor details.

i don't think that anyone can confirm this but it is rather likely that it was Rahu. what other juvenile WTE could it be? the nearest other WTE territory must be very far.

the rain in the morning made the air more humid again and maybe also more water leaked inside the camera casing. the fog must come from a change of temperature again. the whole window seems to be covered with dew. i guess that the inside of the camera box is colder than the outside air which is very humid and has become warmer in the sunshine. water vapour is probably condensing on the outside of the camera window now. it may become clearer in the evening when the air becomes colder. or not. 8-)

btw: the microphone has also been cracking after the rain. new water in the cables and connectors. :slap:

Anne7, those were more like my thoughts and speculations, no real explanations. :D
what is the source of your information? - thanks Anne!
i think it was very useful.

I didn't see the ring because of the fog, but I would guess that Taibu is on the front now and Nord still down. Since he is more vocal (more hungry).
