When the partner is around, Karl II clatters his beak in a special way. That's why I supposed Kati was nearby.

Karl II often lies on the nest with its beak open. Is it too hot? :puzzled:
The only explanation for any heat that I can think of is the decomposition process of the enormous amount of moss, leaves, hay and other nesting material in the nest bowl. A real garden-compost-pile can reach temperatures of 49-70 degrees Celsius in just a few days (inside the pile). Maybe they now have underfloor heating in the castle?

Good morning, I'm new in here and have been following Karl and Kati last year with big interest.

Sad to see that Karl didn't make it on his was back. However and most importantly, we still got a succesfull start in this years season and I'm looking forward to whatever the next weeks and months will bring :D

Anne thanks a lot for the great pictures yesterday evening and today :2thumbsup:
I'm late, but I had to finish something. The data are now on its way to Latvia.
I think our ornithologists are all in the field now. Like Urmas, who has hopefully successfully trapped a goshawk. The answer to my question will take awhile

I think Kati slept on a tree near the nest. Maybe even in the old nest. It may not be comfortable to always stand on the same branch?
They also use trees to have some distance from their little cuties :mrgreen:

I checked the files in the archive. Karl II is incredibly busy with nest aerating and egg rolling. He does that very conscientiously. Almost better than Kati.

12:57:44 Kati tried to catch a bumblebee. She did not want a buzz while she was sleeping :mrgreen:

I've noticed the Karl II being used frequently.
In English the name Karl is usually Charles and, for short, it's Charlie or slightly different ending - Charley. Perhaps we could use that until the time comes to vote on a name if necessary. Pronounced char-lee
