No more Mr. and Mrs. E : :D They have now very nice names!

The Latvian Dabasdati.lv forum members have given names to these WTEs in cooperation with Lithuanian members:

"Officially, the couple are given names Lubana (female) and Sartas (male) "

The male was born in Sartai regional park in NE of Lithunia (ringed on June 4, 2007) and Sartas means lake. Lubana is also a name of a lake, situated in Latvia, in Madona region.

More information on the first page of this thread, see ame's post.

9:12, a little later Sartas came home.
Image

he had an escort of ravens following him, not very near but they were there, the infamous egg-steelers. Sartas didn't look any drier than Lubana.

- i wish this rainy weather doesn't get wetter than this, at least i hope there will not be very hard rain. Eagle-Urmas thinks that maybe some of the wiring got wet on March 25th in the hard rain when the egg was laid and short-circuited. later when the wires dried up they began to work normally.

suddenly Sartas began to call loud and long. Lubana replied short.
Image

she is nearby, or at least was then; maybe she left after that. maybe it was a 'see you later' -call.
after that Sartas rolled the eggs and now (9:31) he seems to be falling asleep.

i was also wondering about the backgrounds of these two names. they are beautiful names and have well-suited explanations.

thank you for the information, lispet! great that you take the time to read the Dabasdati-forum.

i think that Sartas was sleeping....
but then a beep from a little bird or something woke him up. :D

i've noticed that rainy weather is very tiresome for eagles. they like to sleep over bad weather.

i made a Pontu clip of the toilet trip which Lubana made yesterday. when i watched the video again i noticed that the delay from the shot to the sound of landing was rather long. the long time of fligth suggests that the nest must be rather high up in the tree.

it came to my mind that the separation of the time of launch and landing can be used to estimate the height of the nest from the ground (or anything under the nest where to poop shot landed). Lubana shot the poop almost exactly horizontally at 13:56:00.130. therefore we don't need to know at what speed she shot the poop, and it is simple to calculate the heigth of fall using the time of flight.
Image

for to get the landing time i stopped the VLC-player at the time when i heard the splash of landing. on the first trial the clock stopped at 13:56:02.701 and on the second time at 13:56:02.621. these observations give times of flight 2.571 s and 2.491 s. the first time of flight gives us an estimate for the height of the nest of 32.4 m and the latter shorter time gives 30.4 m!

i think that the shorter time might be more accurate due to my reaction time in stopping the clock. this would delay stopping the clock and thus give longer time and taller height. but on the other hand there must be some vegetation under the nest and we hear the splashing sound when the poop hits the top of that vegetation (bushes or hay). so this would mean that there might still be a meter or two more down to the ground.

the Pontu clip of the shot.

i also calculated how much error might be caused due to the uncertainty of the time of flight. as a result i got an uncertainty of about 2.5 m, which gives us maximum error of 3 m. given these uncertainties i think that the nest must be on a height of 30 - 32 meters plus-or minus 3m! (at least 27 m but not more than 36m).
Janis has to climb high if he want to ring those chicks.
