April 24

Good Morning all :hi:

Anne, thanks for the great pictures :2thumbsup:

Summi, indeed, he looks like an beautiful Black Swan :innocent:

8:20 Karl II is still in the nest and is poking in the nest ground, while he is sitting

8:26 he is still aerating the nest

I have read a very interesting study on nest building by birds.
They bring different grasses, moss ect. with essential oils in the nest to reduce the germ burden or mite infestation.

Also, the amount of material brought is instinctively controlled. When it gets cold, they bring more material.
The poking in nest is not only for aerating the nest. They open or close air holes int the nest wall, depending on the weather, temperature in the nest ect ...

Birds in cities, such as sparrows, who do not find adequate grasses with essential oils, use cigarette butts. Of un-smoking cigarettes. That's strange. But it keeps the breeding cavity free of mites.

Thank you, asteria

20:56 Karl II brings something dark, maybe soil. Is Kati sitting on a stick? :puzzled:
Image

20:57 He flies OUT

20:04 IN again, with moss and hay
Image

20:07 Kati is on the eggs, Karl II on the curved branch
Image

(Possibly Karl II was also on the nest already before 20:56, but I can not scroll back that far.)

Good night, everyone.

Was the fly-by Karl II or even Karl? It sounds confusing for Kati; did she attack Karl II because she thought he was an intruder?

I think you are right. Black Stork was without rings. I think it was Karl II all the time. Karl II likes to fly through the forest. Maybe he wanted to show Kati how great he can fly. I do not know what it means.
