12.34 Sartas began to call suddenly ...




he calls so much in a beeping voice. he got up and is staring at the sky...


now he lays back down on the eggs. i wonder what that was about..? i could not hear anything strange...

12:40 Sartas began to call again...


he stood up


and looked around


and i heard Lubana too.

Sartas took off, calling still.




also Lubana called.

then Lubana landed on the nest. both eagles called, Lubana on the nest and Sartas somewhere near...


then i think i heard some voices ggrrrr grrr... it had to be a raven's voice or the voice of a hooded crow.
Lubana lay down on the eggs. -that was a loud change of turns.

how did you calculated the distance per second?
This is a rather low nest, located about 18-20 meters above the ground. It has never actually been measured precisely and I will do that at some moment, probably when chicks will be ringed..

i made a Pontu clip of the toilet trip which Lubana made yesterday. when i watched the video again i noticed that the delay from the shot to the sound of landing was rather long. the long time of fligth suggests that the nest must be rather high up in the tree.

it came to my mind that the separation of the time of launch and landing can be used to estimate the height of the nest from the ground (or anything under the nest where to poop shot landed). Lubana shot the poop almost exactly horizontally at 13:56:00.130. therefore we don't need to know at what speed she shot the poop, and it is simple to calculate the heigth of fall using the time of flight

i used the formula h = ½*g*t*t (t-squared!).

i may have the time of flight totally wrong though. i may have underestimated my reaction time. but the delay from launch to the splash was rather long. and i omitted the resistance of air completely. that may be crucial, too.

14:52 Lubana talks again.

... and took off.


then both sing together in the forest. actually they had rather a lot to talk to each other.

14:54 Sartas flew in quite quietly.

16:25 Sartas called at or to something/someone...

16:29 again Sartas called. this time Lubana replied from rather near and Sartas got up...

but lay down again.


then Lubana still said something to him. Sartas stays in the nest.

- then nothing.
probably (my guess!) Sartas saw that Lubana came and greeted her. then they agreed that Sartas should stay in the nest.

but now it sounds like Sartas would like to leave: he called again.

16:38 Lubana calls from forest and Sartas answers. they have a lot to talk about.


16:45 Sartas began to preen his back. no more calls. on the last time i think Lubana's voice came from a larger distance than the earlier calls. i think she called that she still has some business to attend to and then left.

well that business of hers didn't take long. at 16:49 Sartas began to call again...


he got up...


and took off at 16:50.

then some more calling from both, Lubana on the nest and Sartas called from the forest. ... and Lubana landed on the nest.


she called some more to Sartas on the nest.


then Lubana lay down on the eggs.

17:09 Lubana saw something which she had to call at.
