January 1st

Here we are again ...

We'll see if tonight is that noisy for a lot of living beings

Riga really didn't skimp on fireworks.
The new year was welcomed with great euphoria - or was the old one said goodbye?

Since night vision is turned off this year, it was not possible to see the nest area properly. Sometimes "fireworks" were shot off, which is really quite something... especially loud ...glaring.
When I watch these minutes, I feel the panic of the animals.

There were a few moments where there was rustling and cracking but it could have been anything.

Well, no Goshawk has been seen or heard yet.
However, the little neighbors can be heard cheerfully in the new year.
Tits are chirping, wrens, bullfinch... and ravens and crows were already making small talk (11:33)

Cautious and shy...
Team H gives no signal. But I think they are present. Her neighbors reveal it.

I have seen that in Latvia there were not supposed to be fireworks except in some cities but they are heard every year (and close like this year).

Today we're actually getting something on our ears.

It started at 09:46...until at least 09:50.
(We can already guess that there is movement in the undergrowth here. Clear crackling noises can be heard - for example 08:21, '24, '30, '31(!), '36, '40(!)



It seems that the duel between the females takes place over a large part of the day.

From 12:10 it is primarily the young female that can be heard with individual calls.

I've noticed for a few days that the area appears to be under water. Although there is a stream (water-bearing ditch) running through it, the amount of precipitation seems to have been too much.

And... who brought the alder branches? Sweet the cones... I can't remember.
The last branch must have been a long time ago.

13:01 another call for a break and my gut says it's H21.
Their call sounds mild, conciliatory with short sounds at the end.

13:03 This part of the territorial disputes is getting really tiring for me. I'm saturated with sounds and can't tell whether we're hearing an imitation, a "powerless" H21 or a juvenile imitating H21

Then it becomes clearer again until 1:28 p.m. - the young female calls.

14:08 - 14:55 final spurt for the ladies.
Both gather their energy again and bundle it into shouts.

This stage is also interesting to hear but it is too tricky to make a video here. I would have to cut too much and there is not enough interest for the effort.
There's definitely a lot of cracking to be heard... there was real movement today.

It cannot be taken for granted that the resident female defended successfully. And let's say it's H21... there are definitely very strong young females.

It's always interesting that the males completely abstain.


It would be good if Team H slowly found its way to the nest.
It is also very important for us to know whether we are writing about Team H at all.
Keep your fingers crossed that the couple shows up soon.

I think someone is hanging around here.
10:39 quiet crackling and a larger bird comes hidden from the left and settles in a group of branches.

It will only get noticeably milder next week. Well, it's winter.

The goshawk chicken is still in the area although little has been heard of it today.

At the moment the temperature in Riga is -13º C and after the snowfall that soaks the ground well, it remains longer if there has been accumulation in the humid area of the nest. Also the clearer corridor that we saw before is seen with more snow. ... It's the winter that Polly says, so far there has been more snow than other years and the temperatures are those of January.

Calm winter weather today... a dream.

It's relatively unspectacular so far but not entirely without Goshawk.
