Hello everyone!

Michi :hi:

Liz, thank you very much for your great photos and comments.
What a wonderful sunrise!
I am very happy that Karl II was again so diligent this morning.
He has long forgotten his bad mood. :D

12:01 Kati takes good care of her plumage.
Image

12:02 She doesn't skip a single feather.
Image

12:02 Here we see how Kati rubs her preen gland.
Image

In this article, we can read about the function of the Preen Gland, also known as Uropygial Gland or Oil Gland.
"... During preening, birds gather oily secretions that contain diester waxes from their oil glands. This gland is located near the base of (just above) the tail.
Birds distribute the oil over the plumage. The function of this oil is somewhat disputed. All will agree that it serves to maintain and condition their skin and feathers. In all likelihood, it helps to waterproof the plumage (a concept that is not universally accepted but appears likely - particularly in water birds). However, some authorities state the water-proofing effect is primarily achieved by dense feathers that insulate by trapping air thus maintaining an air-tight surface and - in some birds - a water-tight structure. ..."

13:32 Still Kati on the eggs. She looks relaxed and takes a nap.
Her nose is hidden deep in the feathers.
Image

13:38 Kati turns the eggs.
Image

13:43 And... brooding again. There is not much more to do to pass the time than to preen. :D
Image

I wonder when Karl II will arrive.

around 30 days after they start breeding. Mostly they start brooding after the 2 egg. So we can expect the first chick on May 15 or 16.

Kati still has plenty of time to catch fish and frogs, this afternoon.

15:37 Karl II does the housework.
Image

15:38 He starts brooding. But he keeps cleaning.

Could it be that Karl II is somewhat hyperkinetic?
Or does he simply have a cleaning mania?

Anne, you are right - Karl II has a cleaning mania and that's not all. Today's pics by Liz show him as an absolute moss freak, I bet that the amount of moss he has brought to the nest surpasses the amount of the normal BS at least threefold.
