It has been a wildly fantastic season, with so many high points. However, it was undoubtably a huge low to lose one of our osprey chicks, 1C1. Earlier evidence indicated that she was dealing with an infection. Today that infection was confirmed to be a case of salmonella. Thank you for all the support and we will keep you up to date with any further news. Until then, here is 1C1 enjoying her time on the nest earlier in the season.

It looks as though all the Brenig ospreys have now left on migration to their wintering grounds in West Africa.
We know that LJ2 (father) is seen in The Gambia but have no idea where LM6 (mother) spends the winter or where the chicks (KA9 Gelert and X6 Olwen) will choose to spend not only this winter but the following year as well, before they return as adults.
KA9 was last seen at the Brenig nest on 27th August, whilst X6, LM6 and LJ2 were still coming to the nest until the 30th August. But it now looks as though they have all left!
Keep following the page for updates throughout the winter including talks and videos of this year.

We may have seen the last of our ospreys for the 2022 season.
Sarafina was seen briefly on the nest on Friday morning and an osprey thought to be Sarafina was seen by LizB perching off-camera in the evening.
Louis did not show up at all on Friday. This is the first day we haven't seen him deliver a fish to the nest since his return back in April.
Through Saturday there has been no sign of any osprey or even distant calls heard on the nest.
So we can assume they have now departed. A further blank day on Sunday would firm up that assumption.

Lovely time of year to see geese on Loch Garten. There is even a group of whooper swans on there at the moment.

As some of you might already know, our team has been extended the past few years to some of the greatest conservationists Abernethy has ever seen. This team has been doing great work at restoring ancient pine forests through natural processes.
So I would like to introduce you to Leonardo Dicowprio. Although he has not won as many Oscars as you would expect, he has been getting really into his new role of churning up the field layer and immersing himself in the herd. Surely this role of living out in the forest for an extended period of time in all weather conditions will put him in great stead with the academy nominations board. Only time will tell if this is an Oscar-worthy role. Either way, we are grateful to have him as part of our team!

Well done to head herdsman Mike Butler for being highly commended in the Innovation category last night at the Nature of Scotland award for the cattle in the forest. I will let you all decide on a suitable cow-based pun for Mike but here he is explaining a little about the project.

Thursdays Herdsday and we are looking at another amazing chomper and churner that is roaming through the forest.
This lovely little floof is Flora Moocdonald. She is a highland lass who loves long walks through the forest and hates techno music. This is probably linked to her classical background where she achieved Grade 8 cowbell at the young age of 5. In cow culture, this is referred to as simply "bell".
When she is not redistributing plant matter throughout the forest you can find her snoozing on her back. Thank you for all your hard work Flora!

Thursday is Herdsday and we are celebrating the leader of the herd. Our very own Nicoola Sturgeon!
Although pictured here lying down it should be known that she is only resting from the monumental task of getting things in order and that this is not her normal state of being. Nicoola is very interested in cowservation and much of her mandate looks at how much churning of the forest is necessary for biodiversity to thrive.

Thursday is Herdsday and we are introducing one of Scotland's greatest bovine thespians; Peter Coopaldi. He is really in the thick of it now with his leading role in the forest and has been adapting well to life out of the city. He has become our local hero and we will do our best to keep you in the loop with his exploits.

Thursday is Herdsday and I thought I would just show you the whole herd today trying to keep cosy in the snow! These highland-bred cattle are hardy beasts that are so fluffy for a reason and they are one of the few species that don't slow down in these conditions.

We're getting ready for the osprey's return later on in the spring!
February 24

Welsh Water’s climbing team have begun the task of readying the Osprey nest at Llyn Brenig ahead of their anticipated return.
Mae tîm dringo Dŵr Cymru wedi dechrau’r dasg o baratoi nyth y gweilch yn Llyn Brenig, cyn iddynt ddychwelyd.
A metal sleeve has been fitted to the base of the pole, to help deter any climbing predators this year. They have also added a new oak perch to a tree next to the bird hide. Hopefully, that will provide some even closer views of the birds for some lucky hide occupants.
Whilst they were on the nest, Welsh Water climbers even managed to recover LM6’s blue leg ring, which she lost last year. This will be put on display in the exhibition later in 2023.
Smartwater has been deployed again this year, which will forensically mark anyone that touches the items we have marked.
Felling work, consistent with the recommendations of the Osprey Conservation Plan, has now been completed, and replanting with native species will be finished before the ospreys come back.

Poole Harbour, England

Birds of Poole Harbour are partnered with the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation to deliver the Poole Harbour Osprey Translocation Project, aiming to restore a breeding population of these charismatic birds of prey to the South Coast. The project, which started in 2017, involves the translocation of 60 juvenile Ospreys from Scottish nests into the Poole Harbour area. This process aims to create a bond between the young Ospreys and their new local area, before they leave on their first treacherous migration, usually to West Africa. This bond draws the Ospreys back to Poole Harbour on their return to the UK, after at least 2 years maturing in their wintering grounds, when they will identifying suitable nesting sites. The translocation therefore lays the foundations for their return as a breeding bird to the South Coast, 180 years on from their local extinction.

We have very exciting news this morning about the forthcoming reintroducing of ospreys into Ireland which you may have heard about this week..
We are delighted to annuonce that Loch Arkaig is going to play an important role as a staging post for the movement of 50 to 70 Norwegian ospreys to Ireland over the next five years.
As the loch was the last nesting location for ospreys before they became extinct in the British Isles in the early 20th Century, it is a great honour for us to play a role in bringing the birds back to every corner of these isles.
Experts at Ireland's National Parks and Wildlife Service approached us to ask for help.
They have concluded that if the Norwegian ospreys are flown directly from Scandinavia to Ireland, this would greatly confuse the birds' navigational instincts. There will therefore be a six week stopover in Scotland to break up the journey and allow the ospreys to recallibrate their sense of direction.
The birds will be released temporarily at a location half way along the loch, so as not to encroach on the territories of existing residents.
To stop them straying too far, and to aid recapture when it is time for the second leg of their journey, they will be fed specially prepared fish dosed with Guinness.
We can't wait to see the first of our temporary osprey guests!
