It may not have been the right conditions to band & track Ospreys today but we were still able to show Ian, Ervie with his tracker still sitting perfectly and Calypso and her mate sitting quietly in one of their favourite spots.

2022.11.14 - Introducing Zoe - with her newly acquired black back pack (satellite tracker) and her pink jewellery (leg band).
Zoe weighed in at 1700 grams which is the heaviest Osprey we have banded and tracked in South Australia. It looks like she thinks she is now ready to go travelling. It will be wonderful to follow her travels and see how she differs from Calypso, Solly & Ervie, all Ospreys from this nest - sorry I had to repost as I used the lower quality video. Hope this one is better.

Fran Solly > Friends of Osprey

This is a photo of Ervie the 2021 Chick from the Port Lincoln Nest who was last year fitted with a Satellite Tracker. The Trackers provide valuable data once the bird leaves the nest. Data that was not previously available and that is helping to build knowledge vital to the Osprey Recovery Program.
Today the 2022 Chick from the Port Lincoln Osprey nest has been fitted with a tracker and banded by Ian Falkenberg who has approval under the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme and who is a current Wildlife Ethics and Scientific Research Permit Holder
This post seeks to answer some questions regarding trackers to the best of my knowledge.
Prior to fitting the tracker the bird is weighed, measured and assessed for condition. The bird tracked today was the heaviest so far tracked in this project weighing in at 1700 grams. She is a female bird and we have called her Zoe.
The tracker weighs 30 grams. It is fitted using a harness made from kevlar tape. The harness is made up of tapes that go over and under the birds wings paying special care to not interfere with any flight feathers. Fitting is a precise task to ensure that the fit is not too loose and not too tight. The harness comes to the breast of the bird and is stitched with cotton which is designed to have the whole harness and tracker fall off in approximately four years by which time it is anticipated that the bird will be close to nesting. During the next few weeks the birds normal preening will allow the harness to fit comfortably to the bird.
Tracking downloads are provided to the researcher twice a day. This will show
- the length of initial flights after fledge
- where the bird goes when she eventually leaves the nest in late January or early February
- where she forages
- where she perches particularly at night
- if the bird does become a mortality then the tracker will indicate the location allowing for recovery and further analysis of the cause.
All of this data is vitally important to assist planning for the recovery of Osprey in South Australia.
We thank Ian for his dedication in the preparation for Tracking, the absolute care he shows in the execution of his work and his ongoing commitment to Osprey.
Thanks also to Shark Cage Diving - Calypso Star Charters who provide the boat and Skipper for this work.

2022.11.15 - Just shows you how resilient our local Osprey are - no tall trees, no problem, just perch on top of this tourists antenna. Wonder if they realise they have an Osprey guest! Thanks @Taryn-lee Perrior for the photo.

Came up in my ‘memories’ the nest on the old barge 7 years ago. Oh how nest life has improved for this family. And at the time we were told not to move the nest or they would abandon it.

"Mum's" reaction to the banding/tracking exercise...
As the boat approached the Barge Mum flew off (in a flock of pigeons) she circled over head before landing on an antenna on the Barge to watch what was going on. Later she flew a short distance to the Old Barge before returning to sit on the antenna again.

All three have fledged now we have a few weeks while they learn to fish and develop their wing strength.
Bazza - red band
Ervie - green band and tracker
Falky - yellow band

2022.11.23 - Zoe did a short flight and ended up in Dad's 'mancave' where she stayed for just under 4 hours. Mum & Dad were close by until she was brave enough to take off again and get back on the nest. From there she has done a few short hops to the nearby perch - tomorrow will be a big day.

Great to see another satellite tracker fitted to an Osprey from Wills Creek on the Yorke Peninsula.

Fran > SollyFriends of Osprey

Thanks to Margaret Falkenberg for sending this photo of Ian and son Daniel fitting a satellite tracker to Will a male Osprey from the Price nest on Yorke Peninsula. A second male chick was banded. So thats three of the four approved trackers fitted and we are hoping Ian can fit a fourth on a Kangaroo Island bird next week. That will give us a good spread across the state for 2022 and a mix of females (Zoe and Ronnie) and males (Will) with a bit of luck the KI bird will be a male as well.
Happy Birthday Ian thanks for working for Osprey recovery on your special day 🥳

2022.12.02 - Thistle Island - Today we banded and attached a tracker to 'Ronnie' the Thistle Island Osprey. Ronnie is a very healthy female so perhaps Ronnie is short for Veronica or maybe she is named after Ron - the man who was the instigator of the Port Lincoln Osprey barge and camera and also was the owner of Thistle Island before he developed it into what it is today. This short video shows how calm the Osprey is whilst the tracker is being attached.

Here is Ian Falkenbergs latest report - sorry but I will have to do it in several posts.
Price - American River / Pelican Lagoon - (January 2023)
Following on from last months update, have included photographs taken by Dave Potter on Kangaroo Island who has kindly allowed me to use his photos in my update. The Osprey (Phantom) in the American River / Pelican Lagoon area showing the satellite tracker position 14 months following fitting in early Nov 2021. The tracker remains in the correct position both centrally and close to the centre of gravity between the wings. An important criteria for fitting satellite trackers to ensure the birds flight performance is not affected and these photos are an important way of monitoring this aspect.
This Osprey is now in her second year and whilst the feathers look a bit dishevelled, she is moulting new feathers (eg coverts, scapulars & a couple of retrices can be seen).
Photos 1 & 2 (above) – Osprey (Phantom) showing the Satellite Tracker position (bottom right) and emerging adult plumage (top left). Photos supplied by Dave Potter, Kangaroo Island.

Ervie has had a very busy day. The Tunarama festival is in full swing so there is loud music, announcements, thousands of people, sideshows and helicopter rides all in his foraging space. He has foraged away from the foreshore for some of the day but interestingly he has also spent some time perched watching the crowd. See the post below where he was spotted by Bob Whittaker watching the comings and going’s below
