Is it too much to ask Karl II and all the other returning black storks steer clear of Ukraine on the way back??

Migration always has to find its way somewhere.
I'm not sure a war zone is more dangerous than other trails. Where fowlers, hunters... trophy collectors lurk. Where food is scarce, where the weather is treacherous or power poles cut short the journey. Or natural predators overpower them.

The birds will always be on the lookout - no matter where. Her instinct warns her. Yet there will always be painful losses.

We can only wish them safety.

During spring migration KarlII flies in the Western part of Ukraine, it is less dangerous than Kherson region where he was in October.
