The official name of the Eagle owl in Estonian is "kassikakk": kass = cat, kakk = owl, kassikakk = cat's owl
Thank you for the extensive explanation, very interesting.Triin wrote: ↑April 6th, 2022, 7:44 pm The official name of the Eagle owl in Estonian is "kassikakk": kass = cat, kakk = owl, kassikakk = cat's owl
Other names for the Eagle owl in Estonian include "kõrvadega öökull" (owl with ears), "suurispeakull" (owl with big head), "uhuu-kull" (uhuu owl), "jänesekull" (rabbit's owl). We have eight (or nine) different species of owls breeding in Estonia, but it was common in the folklore to distinguish only two types of owls - the one with the ears (Eagle owl) and the other one.
Eagle owl - kassikakk (cat's owl)
Greate grey owl - habekakk (bearded owl)
Ural owl - händkakk (owl with tail)
Tawny owl - kodukakk (domestic owl)
Boreal owl - laanekakk (forest owl)
Short-eared owl - sooräts (bog owl)
Long-eared owl - kõrvukräts (owl with ears)
Pygmy owl - värbkakk (passerine owl)
Northern hawk-owl - vöötkakk (owl with stripes)
