'Kassi' means of or like a cat, right? (Kassipoeg is kitten?)

Kassikakk = cat owl? If so, it's very appropriate and puts other languages' names for this bird to shame.

As far as I understand it, "kass" means cat, and "kakk" means owl, in Estonian.

So unlike the English speaking people, who call the Bubo bubo "eagle owl", the Estonians seem to use the name "cat owl".

And with their round face, pointed tufted ears (which are not really ears), beautiful big orange eyes, and triangular ‘nose’, these wonderful birds indeed look a bit like cats.
They look more like cats than like eagles, as far as the head is concerned.

Their wings are a different story though.

I love language comparisons.

We call the eagle owl "oehoe"
And the Great grey owl the "Laplanduil" (owl from Lapland = Sápmi?)
The Barn owl is called “kerkuil” (church owl)
We call the Tawny owl “bosuil” (forest owl). And apparently, in Estonian the Boreal owl is called “forest owl” . We call the Boreal owl “ruigpootuil” (rough-legged owl).

I was stopped by a man desperately searching for his runaway cat and asking if it was taken by a Tawny Owl
Swedish name for Tawny Owl is Kattuggla or Cat Owl in english
I had a hard time convincing him that they only eat mice and not cats

Funnily enough, in Finnish, the Eagle owl is the only owl that doesn't have word 'pöllö' (owl) in its name. The Finnish name for bubo bubo is huuhkaja.
