Does anyone remember the date last year when the little owl left the nest? I think think it was much younger than this year´s owlet. It´s very unfortunate that he´s not in the nest as he shouldn´t have left until mid-June but he´s big and strong so I hope his parents will feed him so he can survive. I am missing him so much.

Looking back to 18th July 2023 the youngest of the three owlets was still in the nest and branching. So this year´s owlet is too young to be out of the nest. I hope someone will look for him when it´s daylight and put him back in the nest.

laranjeiras, thank you very much
that was a great fledge
From my point of view, Hanna encouraged it. She showed that it was time to go.
It is old enough and much fatter than our owlets from last year. An offspring that has never gone hungry for a single day.
That was a great season.
I have done a video from their last stay together on nest
There were beautiful moments with Hanna before our little one wandered up the branch and out of sight

Hi, I remember that last year it was 24.06, because estonians celebrate midsummer (Jaanipäev) in 23.06 and the party was heard in camera at night - next day first owlet jumped out of the nest.carol.alida wrote: ↑May 29th, 2024, 12:48 am Does anyone remember the date last year when the little owl left the nest? So all is normal! It was the only chick. So,it had an infinite advantage of always having enough food. This meant that it grew faster. It left the nest at exactly the right time

June 06/07:
From memory and for info: I saw a post in the YT-chat today, posted at 11:44 pm - that should be June 06 - "she-wolf". I was too late and couldn't retrieve it And therefore cannot verify it either, but maybe Kotkaklubi can?

22:15: Zooooom. Thank you!
What a look ....
22:40: Bubo bubo flies away (I don't know the Owls here well enough, so I cannot tell you whether it was Hanna or Hugo or someone else...)

22:43: Came from down at the right and and circled right to branch on a tree in the rear.
The pic. is , u-hum: of questionable quality, but Bubo bubo was just too swift for me, sorry. (I slowed down to 0,25, so you can at least have a notion ...)

To survive, Eagle Owl need the protection of each nest site
The action plan for the protection of the Eagle Owls completed this spring sets the goal for the next five years of increasing the number of offspring of the Eagle Owls in a critical condition and increasing the area of known habitats.
According to Leelo Kuke, Deputy Director General of the Environment Agency in the field of wildlife, the extinction of the Eagle Owl threatens our nature, which is why the species needs effective protection. "In the last few years, less than ten nesting pairs of Eagle Owls have been registered in Estonia, and last year, only one chick of the Eagle Owl was known to be able to fly in Estonia. "In order for the Eagle Owl not to die out in Estonia in the coming decades, it is necessary to find and effectively protect all Eagle Owl habitats and enable undisturbed nesting," said Kukk.
The number of the Eagle Owls, which belongs to the list of protection category I, has continuously and rapidly decreased in recent decades, currently there are 30-40 pairs in the wild in Estonia, but not all pairs have offspring. The fortunes of the population of the Estonian Eagle Owl are affected by natural threats such as nest raids, food shortages and changes in the quality of harvest areas, as well as by human influences such as environmental toxins, disturbance during nesting, death in power lines and logging in previously unknown habitats.
According to Renno Nellis, an expert who prepared the protection action plan, the Eagle Owl poop mostly nests in old, sparse, light-filled pine forests, mostly in coastal areas, and builds its nest on the ground. "eagle Owl chicks growing on the ground are at risk of being killed by predators and birds, but some nesting sites have a high number of human visits, because Eagle Owl nests in near-coastal, so-called recreational forests, which are also liked by people," said Nellis.
The action plan approved this spring calls for, among other things, the construction of above-ground nesting boxes in inhabited habitats to reduce breaking and disturbing the young on the ground. According to the plan, the study of young birds must also be continued using GPS transmitters; monitor the condition of birds in all known habitats during national monitoring, investigate the causes of death of dead birds, and install information boards in habitats close to settlements asking to keep dogs on a leash and not to walk outside the paths.
The Eagle Owl is the largest Owl in Estonia and all of Europe with big orange eyes and striking feathered ears. It is a faithful, disturbance-sensitive and long-lived bird. If the mate dies, the bird sometimes remains alone for a long time. Several nesting sites are known in Estonia as well, where Eagle Owls are single and do not have offspring until they find a new mate.
Renno Nellis, a species expert from MÜT Kotkaklub, prepared the draft action plan for the protection of the Eagle Owl
