Black Stork Nest 2, Jan and Janika, 2022
JAN and JANIKA
Text by Kotkaklubi:
The Black Stork nest is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia. We have known this breeding territory since the late 1990s, when black storks successfully nested here for many years.
After 2004, the nest site remained empty. The male bird Tooni, who nested here at the time, moved to the adjacent territory. The nest where Tooni moved, was the first Estonian black stork nest camera in 2005-2010.
Black storks came back to the nest seen currently on the camera only a year or two ago. It is an old artificial nest. We built a new platform in the early spring of 2021.
Considering the critical situation of the black stork in Estonia, itis a small miracle that the storks came back to here.

Thank you, Juta!
The camera of this nest is now also online!
Thank you very much, Urmas and colleagues!
Both Jan and Janika are already on their nest.
At least, I assume it is them.
May they have a happy and successful breeding season.

Thank you Juta; Anne7 and Asteria!
I am so glad the BS season begins in both nests! This colorful joy is so much needed in the present dark grey times... Thank you, Kotkaklubi! May all the little J.s thrive and prosper this year!
15:30 True love... They stood together like this from 15:20 - for full 12 minutes!
18:41 Very promising!
18:42 The nest is being "mossed out" already.

8:54 one came home .. short whistling.
If I compare the eyes, it has to be Janik
but it is not Janik! Stork looks different! it's the female. So we have a new female?
Janika's head was brownish last year... but feathers change at the moult .. so...(rather not! Kati's head was brownish every year!)
I need a picture of the female to see her eyes clearly
It's too early to say anything specific. I have to watch more closely! So far it's just the first impression!
9:44 is still in the nest.. alone. So I can not see male or female .. not nice

Hello all!
Happy new season which has started quite promising!
I suggest not to start guessing if it is the same couple Jan-Janika as last year.
It is known that there are not many black storks in Estonia and there is a very big lack of female storks(for unknown reason).
So better to think:
how likely it is possible that another(new) female came to the nest,
as Kotkaklubi wrote "it is a small miracle that the birds came back to here",
how likely is the whole new couple to come to this nest?
I think they behave like an old couple in a well-known place.
Even if(but maybe we will never know that) they are not Jan-Janika, we can still name them Jan-Janika until another couple comes to get this place.

Many thanks for this topic, Juta! And thanks a lot everyone for information and the pictures!
What a beautiful couple! And also a wonderful nest view!
Juta, from what you have said, it seems very likely that this is the pair from last year. But I can't say anything about their appearance.
It is such a pity and sad that there are so few Black Storks nesting in Estonia.
We are lucky that we have these two wonderful storks here. :-)
May they have a lucky season with lots of food for all.

Without rings it is pretty hard to guess whether it is J&J from last year or another couple.

I wish you a good season to Jögeva County in 2022
(and hopefully the bears have moved elsewhere)!
It seems very likely to me too that this is Jan & Janika. Of course, you can't know certainly, but at least they behave similarly and spend a lot of time together.
