Hi all :hi:

A article LMV :
A new Black storknest is discovered by forest planners! they found the nest in a aspen tree

While planning forest management, JSC "Latvijas valsts meži" (LVM) planner Emīls Elksnītis noticed a large nest in an aspen tree at the LVM North Latgale region's Balvu area. Upon inspection of the nest, three young black storks were found in it.

To protect the habitat, a territory with a ban on forestry activity and a buffer zone with limited economic activity during the nesting period have been created. The number of black storks in Latvia has decreased significantly, so the protection of each habitat is an important contribution to the preservation of this rare species. LVM employees find around 20 new black stork nests every year, which are protected and included in the monitoring program

About 80% of the known black stork nesting sites in Latvia are located in the forests managed by AS "Latvijas valsts meži". In order to plan appropriate protection measures and assess the population dynamics, which have been negative in recent decades, monitoring of nest population and nesting success is carried out. Last year's monitoring found stork nesting in 56 nests, or 49% of all nests visited by storks

Abigyl,:D

here doesn't seem to be any offspring anymore
I wish for an occupied nest! No matter where, the main thing is a nest in Latvia. A nest in a "fertile environment" with healthy brooks and ditches  This is my wish for the new year 2023 :innocent:

Very strange happenings in the surroundings of the nest!

21:38:58: A shot. (It makes your ears bang!!!)
21:44:21 Next shot.
21:52:40f.: Sounds of an engine (motorcycle?) driving through the woods (?).
21:53:58: Next shot.
21:56:04 ff: Distinctive, unmistakeable motorcycle sounds.

Question: Is this a special way of hunting in Latvia? Guns in combination with motorcycles? 3, in writing: three shots - at what?

Good evening!

13:28 He arrived back at the nest, stayed for a short, one-legged nap.

13:43 he noted someone to the right and started singing exitedly. At 13:43:47 a large bird (or shadow) passes the nest, too faint to be seen clearly.

He took off at 13:44 ...
Image

... and was back at 13:45 still singing and dancing around the nest, but stayed only for half a minute.
Image

Edit:
14:56 He arrived for another 2-minte visit to the nest, still very exited and singing all the time. And again a large shadow passes by nest, possibly the object of his desire?

Good night everyone! :offtobed:

Melno stārķu gredzenošana Latvijā / Black stork banding in Latvia 2022 by M.S.

a nest with extrem little chicks can be seen too.
There is a 2-3 week difference between the big and small chicks in the video. Whether it grows or not depends on the drought and therefore the availability of food. In a week, we will find out how the little chicks are doing.

and there is a article on Goris by Māris Strazds jūnijs 5, 2022 (it concerns among other things. around this nest)
https://goris.lv/ieskats-izrades-aizkulises/

I will translate tomorrow
