In the castle ruins, the eagle owls are breeding again at the same breeding site as last year. After the first of 4 eggs was laid on February 19, 2024, we hope that the breeding and hatching of the young will go smoothly after about 35 days. Another eagle owl breeding site can be seen via livecam in the rocky Ahr valley. You can access it on our website egeeulen.de - there you will also find a diary with further information about what is happening at the breeding sites.

Dear eagle owl fans, unfortunately we on the EGE team are not always available to moderate or comment. The practical work in owl protection needs to be organized and carried out and we are at our limits. We are very pleased about the great interest and hope you enjoy exciting observations in our live stream. Perhaps experienced eagle owl cam observers will be able to answer some of your questions in the chat.
We would like to emphasize that we want above all factual comments and topic-related conversations, with as few private conversations as possible. The attribution of human characteristics when viewing animals also prevents an adequate understanding of their natural behavior and needs. Of course, a certain degree of humanization is required when considering the issues of eagle owls, and we cannot free ourselves from this either. At the same time, it is important to recognize that nature is not always beautiful and also contains cruelties that may not seem fair or just. We thank you for your understanding and support in maintaining a respectful and balanced discussion climate.
About the breeding site: To protect the birds, we will not disclose the location. Care is being taken to preserve the ruins; a little repair was recently carried out to slow down further deterioration. Now there is peace and quiet for the breeding season of the eagle owls. All those involved are enthusiastic eagle owl watchers via webcam and are very concerned about the well-being of the eagle owls. The stage in the castle ruins gives us insights that were impossible on the Ahr due to the confusing rock formations and the camera perspective. We would like to thank the owners of the site for their kind permission.

Rats are the main diet.
Male brings them to the nest or waits upstairs over the cam with the prey.
Female takes the rats out of the nest for eating, absence is about five minutes.
