14:01 alarm calls by Helju ! she is looking up and around

14:28 all is calm on the nest. Helju is looking around, most of time behind her. Could it be that she flew to the loot delivery area to eat something? I don't know it. It better for her to stay with the eggs

There is rather foggy and damp weather. There is likely not enough solar energy to recharge the batteries fast enough.

Kalju delivers prey. The box on the upper left shows a dorsal view of the bird in his talons. Its left wing hangs down. The feathers of flight are well plucked. The wing coverts are black or otherwise dark. The nature of the light line across the propatagium appears to be external to the bird, rather than a marking. Whether any of the remiges are stark white or not, we'd have no way of knowing. The box on the lower right shows a foot with a reduced hallux. The orange scales allow us to cross phasianids such as black grouse off of our list. The feet might be webbed. The crural tract of feathers that meet the leg are black. This should help with narrowing down identification. However, I do not have the time to scan winter/juvenile/breeding/male/female plumages of each species in the region, at the moment. This is when familiarity would pay off. Maybe someone from this region of Estonia will know.

Image

Helju vocally claims and mantles the prey.

Image

11:11:31 - She even carries it away from the eyrie. This prey delivery has captured the attention of northern ravens (Corvus corax).
11:11:47 - Kalju soon settles in to protect and incubate their clutch.

We can hear Helju skawking along with the occasional raven kwoarqing, and follow the action through Kalju's eyes. He begins skawking too, but his voice is nearly a whisper.

11:17:49 - Helju returns with the prey still in her talons. She continues to vocalize and watch the skies for ravens.

She also makes it clear to all observers that the mantling claim wasn't solely due to raven presence.
Helju looks her mate in the eye and tells him to give her some space by threatening to wing slap.

Image

Message received. A raven immediately flashes into brief view in the right corner of sky.

Image

Four (?) or five sail and row by against the wind overhead. A vagrant group of juvenile or otherwise unmated ravens. The third dives at the second bird who could be Kalju. The angle may be throwing off the scale, and I think I spy the tawny bar of secondary upperwing coverts on his downward stroke.

Image

11:20:00 - Helju covers her eggs.

Good Morning!

The camera was working short

6:36 - 6:40 Helju is sleeping

This is the disadvantage of not having access to the archive. You can't really document well. I give up!

The batteries are running low. Have to rely on sun as we cannot change them now that there are eggs in the nest.
