Kergu Black Stork nest was found in 2022, but it has been there for longer. Probably even fallen down, and rebuilt again on the branches of the same aspen tree. During installation of camera I noticed that nest is only partly supported by the branches, so added some kind well visible exoskeleton to keep it more stabile (perhaps). In the end of March 2024 it seems quite good, but still, not fully safe.

Nest site is situated in Pärnu county, near wind farm development area. That was the reason to track Kergu, male stork who nested here last year, as well as reason to install webcam. There are proposed some mitigation measures, like preparing better feeding conditions in other sectors of home range. Hopefully results of those measures will be visible also through webcam in time. The measures are at the moment in planning stage, yet. So if somebody has ideas for mitigation measures in that situation, those would be valuable to analyse in current situation.

Kergu has rings (incl. left leg 7047) since childhood, he has been ringed in 2011 as one of three chicks in nest situated about 10 km of current Kergu nest. Three chicks fledged in Kergu nest in 2022 and they were in good condition during ringing. Female in this nest we did not know, most probably she was without of rings. In 2023, here we did not see female in nest. Kergu refreshed nest properly, few times neighbour male Nurme visited the nest as well as not ringed immature individuals. But in general Kergu was in nest alone, listening neighbour bird species, like woodland owls, passerines, etc.

According former tracking data, Nurme checked this nest also in former years, before we found the nest.

I did a phone image of nest tree, if installed the camera there in 28.03.2024. Raivo, my colleague is standing there for to compare. Though, on photo the forest seems more open as it really is. There were three branches broken of nest tree above the nest because of snow, probably. So it is easier to land on nest for storks, but also easier to spot possible prey for eagles...

Update to environment around the nest 2025

I got news from Urmas about the current events in the surroundings of the nest, he writes:

As wrote in information, there is not sure if launched wind farm in neighbourhood could be tolerated by Kergu and his new partner from last year? The turbines were in building stadium if Kergu was here, they got ready to work after migration started. There are 38 turbines in this wind park, plus solar fields:

https://sopitootsipargid.ee/en/avaleht

According current knowledge these turbines are too close to Kergus nest, but in time of environmental impact assessment (2016) the requirements were different as now. We try to make some investigation of impacts to Black Stork and elaborate compensation measures, but it is not easy to avoid harm. In the same area also new rail way (Rail Baltic) has been started to build. So different big infra structures could make some troubles to local storks and other wildlife. We hope to get information to be more relevant in next similar projects, though new projects appear very quickly and there is not enough time to assess everything, plus simply no information about impacts of new and very big wind turbines.

Here is enclosed a photo I took during installation of camera, visible green branches brought into nest by Buzzard or other bird of prey.

Update to Kergu´s mate Kerli, I quoted the post from Anne in Estonian Black Storks Migration topic
Anne7 wrote: August 13th, 2024, 1:38 pm .
KERLI

Gender: female
Hatched: ? (presumably in 2022)
Ring: 719R
Territory: Pärnu county, Estonia
Wintering: ? (We will see)

Information on birdmap:
A young female Black Stork, which was caught in Pärnumaa County, as part of the Black Stork survey of the Tootsi-Sop wind farm. Survey was ordered by Enefit Green company. It is possible that the same individual visited the black stork Kergu's nest (there is a web camera in the nest) before the capture and installation of the transmitter.
Kerli started its first tracked autumn migration on 2024 July 21.

Hello Black Stork fans! :hi:

We have still no live stream for Kergu´s nest, but I hope very much that it will come online for everyone soon.

Kergu is already in Bulgaria, not far of the border to Romania, see Hulbi Lorm´s post here at the Migration Map topic
https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 39#p947839

Let´s hope, that one of the nice young (?) Black Stork Ladies who visited Kergu and his nest last season, was so impressed of him and his cozy nest, will find the way back to him and nest here :D

A happy new season for all of you!

Hi Kioko :hi:,

we don't (yet) know that much about Trauma, she (it is assumed it is a female) has been discovered and fitted with a transmitter last autumn, so this is her first tracked migration.

All we know about her (and a profile of all other tracked birds except Waba, as well as Birdmap migration reports) can be found in this thread:
https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... php?t=1144

This thread here is usually reserved for everything about the camera that shows the nest of Kergu, which will hopefully be online soon.

I am kind of worried that the cam isn't up yet. We might end up missing Kergu's arrival.

I hope so too. Kerli is on her way. Hopefully she will come to his nest again.

Hello Black Stork fans :hi:

How nice to see Kergu being back home safe and sound! :D Now we are waiting with him for a pretty Lady to start family life
Hopefully both will be brave enough to deal with the new circumstances around the nest ....

I got an update from Urmas about the big changes in the environment of the nest, I´ve put these infos under the introduction post, on top here of the first page

https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 66#p947866

Now we know, that the decorations on the nest were definitely made by a couple of Common Buzzards, as it was suspected

Happy season for everyone here!

It's that time of year again where we get to worry about buzzards, goshawks and owls.
