The Lesser Spotted Eagle nest camera is situated near military training ground. Therefore military training noise is possible to hear quite often. As usual, nest sites of that species are situated in common economic forest and surrounded with protection zone (species protection site). Similar here, also village with passing railway is quite close.
The purpose of this camera is to detect the reaction of breeding eagles to the noise disturbance heard.
We invite volunteers to participate in virtual Lesser Spotted Eagle observations and record them in the appropriate forum (link above). The forum has instructions on how to become a member of the forum and how to post your observations there. This is also possible with pictures or videos proving the event. At the end of the season, we try summarise observations and analyse to what extent the particular Lesser Spotted Eagle pair is affected by noise disturbances in the breeding area. If necessary, it is also possible to review the recorded video material. Expenses of this webcam are covered by Centre for Defence Investments of Estonian Republic.

There in the same nest was one chick fledged in 2024, but before long time the nest was not occupied.
Male in nest is currently without of rings. Female, if returns the same as last year, has transmitter (Milda on migration map), hatched in western Latvia (2016). But this nest can also be inhabited by other individuals.
Camera was installed in 14th of April, but needed remote justification and testing.

Hello LSE fans! :hi:

We have a new LSE nest that we can follow! :shake:

The female on the nest is Milda, the LSE that we know from the Birdmap
https://birdmap.5dvision.ee/EN/

Info text from the birdmap

The female of Lesser Spotted Eagle nesting near the Nursipalu military training area. She is being monitored as part of the military training area impact investigation. Milda grew up in the western part of Latvia, close to the Lithuanian border, so nearly 300 km southwest of her current nesting place. We know this thanks to Aigars Kalvans, who ringed Milda as a nestling in 2016. We didn't put the white ring on Milda's leg, foreseen for Lesser Spotted Eagles born in Estonia.
In 2024, Milda had one chick who fledged before Milda was captured and fitted with a tracking device. It was not possible to catch a mate this time.
2024 autumn migration started for Milda on September 16.

Look, where she spent the winter :faint:

The last time the unknown female was seen on the nest (18.04.2025_14:28)
Image

Milda arrived at the nest, 28 minutes later
Image

Urmas writes, that they can currently be seen on the nest in the mornings, but they stay around, with some flights further into their territory.

There are thoughts to trap the male also, but only later in July, in case a chick will be in the nest.

The neighbour (4,5km) of the webcam nest pair is LSE male Kaaga in migration map, there is female without of transmitter.

:hi: Hello IceAge, great to meet you here!

Both LSE, Milda as well as her mate, were active on the nest this morning. Usually we can recognize Milda by her transmitter/backpack and a metal ring on her right leg. Sometimes, when her feathers are more fluffed up, her transmitter is a bit difficult to see.
Her mate is without any ring and transmitter.

As the couple is also new to me, I still need a bit more observation practice to distinguish them without having to look for transmitter and/or the ring :D

Many thanks , Bea. Then it was Milda, because she has a ring on her right leg.

12:41: Milda leaves to the right, calling.

20:06/7: Milda branches at the right. She flies in with a "swooosh" and a "bamm".

Image

When she is on the nest, a bird with a loud and significant voice (but you know that I am no bird-voice-expert) seems to protest against her presence.

20:11: Milda leaves - the bird stops protesting.

Image

21:01: The male returns ...

Image

... but doesn't stay long, since Milda comes home at 21:03.

She will stay in the nest tonight!

- Exciting how different the surroundings are (I'll stay with Anna in Zemgale, don't worry). : the light, the airiness, and there is an ongoing incredible concert of bird voices in this area. Even the female LSE voice is quite different from Anna. Very enjoyable!

Hi Susanne, nice to meet you here :hi:

Why should someone worry when you post here? :D

About the protesting birdie - I heard it too, but could neither identify it by its protest calls only.
But it made me giggle, it was sooo excited and outraged because of Milda´s presence

It will have to get used to her here!

:hi: Bea, :hi: IceAge!
Not much to report until now:

07:59: Cam off - and back again about 3 mins later. The male is on the nest:

Image

Image

08:06: He leaves.
17:17: The male returns to the nest, there is some calling in the woods - Milda, I think. He quickly checks the nest.

Image

17:18: And darts off again.
