Beginning of May Birgit had been at Fuente de Piedra and had the opportunity to watch Waders in their wedding dress, for example this Curlew Sandpipoer, who are breeding in the high north:

Yesterday Birgit was able to watch a Hoopoo foraging from quite close at an earth wall full of holes and cracks. With his long beak he was everywhere picking for insects and grubs, which most likely thought to be safe in their hiding places. The sudden appearance of such a long beak, must be a nightmare for every spider!

Please see the film:

Of course Birgit not only made videos but also took photos. The walker who met her with all her camera equipment and binoculars looked quite amazed.

And Birgit was amazed about the skill in nest building of the Great Crested Grebe.

And here a report about the wellknown Guadalhorce-Mouth at Málaga. Well, what happened, because there suddenly a pair of Ferruginous Ducks appeared for which I desperately was looking at the Lake Steinhude.

Image

Absulutely sweet were also the Avocet chicks! Please find the report here:

A few days ago Birgit had been already early in the morning at 8 o’clock at the Rio Grande, but the river is as good as dried out. Only single puddles provide some water for the birds.

Birgit discovered a Hoopoo family and …

Image

… despite their offspring was the same size like the parents, they had to be fed. In fact they poked with their long beaks, but not real successfully. But Mum was pleased to help!

Birgit caught a few sequences in a video, please look at it here:

Also today Birgit spent a wonderful morning at birds migration, which, among others, presented this Osprey:

A flock of Storks had to fight heavliy against headwind, that much, that they had to turn. Please find the photos here:

For birds there were ideal conditions yesterday at the Strait of Gibraltar and no Stork had to turn back.

As many other birds also this Honey Buzzard flew hotfoot in African direction:

Finally the temperatures are also at Birgits’ going down a little bit, so they could make– without the risk to melt -, for the first time since many weeks, a trip to the Guadalhorce-Mouth .

Already the first winter guests arrived there, as this Oystercatcher:

Birgit spent four wonderful days at Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Mouth of the Guadalquivirs) and besides of many birds they of course also enjoyed the splendid kitchen there. Altogether a great trip, because also the weather was nice.

At the near Salines of Bonanza they didn’t only meet this very young Greater Flamingo

Image

but whole flocks of birds! What pleasure!

And now telling about the, from me much loved, Waders , which we met at "Corrales de Montijo", near Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The group of six nice Grey Plovers was together with them, waiting for the onset of low tide. Considering what a journey from the high North is behind them ….

The World Day of the Birds we spent at the rice- and cottonfields of La Janda, where this Red-legged Partridge coquetish played with the camera:

Other birds played hide and seek with the camera and us and the Storks anyhow couldn’t care less. They were sailing with relish on the blue autumn sky. Please find the report here:
